The festive season just wouldnt be the same without this speciality beer whose arrival is always long-awaited. The tradition of Christmas beers is particular to northern Europe. In the years following the Second World War, the breweries used to sell an original, richer and stronger beer at the same price as year-round beers: this was their gift to their customers. The Duycks have perpetuated this custom by creating a special beer sold at the usual price. Produced with more malt than Jenlain Ambre (3 different types of malt made from French grown barley and 3 varieties of the most aromatic hops from Alsace), this top fermented, unpasteurized beer, best served at between 6 and 8C, has a rich amber glow, a denser head and stronger alcohol content (6.8% alcohol by volume). Darker than the traditional amber beer, its torrefied undertones are reminiscent of flowers and caramel. And the 2002 Christmas beer had a hint of orange.

From bottle into chalice. One if my top 5 beers, fresh, hands down. This one is 11 months aged. A: brown sugar, alcohol, and carmel malt. Gorgeous brown, amber hue, with frothy, slightly khaki head. And nice lacing! T: sweet carmel front, robust brown sugar middle, and mostly sweet back, almost barley wine-like. P: fairly bubbly, super smooth finish. Better fresh, but great aged! Would be a 4.9, if not 5.0 fresh!

So, when I drank this beer back in 2005, I proudly proclaimed it a very complex and unusual beer. Hmm, not so sure about all that anymore, but the fact remains that I still really enjoy this beer, even if its actually a pretty simple offering. Sweet and malty, with flavors of caramel candy, toffee, and brown sugar, the beer is like good pop music (almost an oxymoron, I know): simple, easy, not challenging, yet somehow for something that is candy-like, its still satisfying and fun. Aromas of sweet caramel candy, toast, toffee, and milk chocolate. Medium in weight with light-medium carbonation. Hazy to cloudy in appearance, the brown body is capped by a small, light-tan head that settles to a thin ring. Enjoyable!

I can safely say this is absolutely one of the most unusual and complex beers Ive ever tasted. The aroma tells you that right off. It smells somewhat like a sweet malt liquor, but with a fairly strong orange scent. In the flavor, I get orange peel, bubble gum, a sugary sweetness, gummy bears, spices, and light bitterness. However, as the beer warms, I think the beers character really comes out. And I mean warming to room temperature. Its a big bottle, so I have plenty of time to actually finish it. At this point, a really nice English fruitiness and caramely maltiness emerges in both the flavor and nose, and adds a degree of familiarity. The palate is sweet, but the light bitterness keeps it from becoming cloying. Dark amber or light brown color, its hard to tell because Im outside the bar and my only real source of light is from the car lot across the street. Clear in appearance. Off-white head is somewhat bubbly and gradually fades to a dimpled sheen. No lace. I think this beer takes some getting used to as its just so odd, but with an open mind and a little patience to let the beer open up, youre rewarded with a pretty nice beer with a flavor that will stick in your mind for a long time. 75 cl bottle @ Timo A. BBE 16.10.2008.
Pours clear mahogany color with a very small head. Sweet malty aroma, mild cardboard-y notes, hay and some toffee, mild caramel. Sweet caramel flavor, toffee notes, malts, somewhat nutty. Soft carbonation, a bit too sweet for my taste.

Appelsin, lime og lidt andre frugter. Ikke s meget humle en fin julel, der nok skal drikkes til mad.

Bottle @ DE. Appearance: Pours clear golden with short lived white soapy head and lacing. aroma/taste notes: bread, a bit of caramel, anis and orange. palette: medium aroma, average carbonation, thin to medium body, average to notable caramel sweetness, low to medium bitterness, medium duration and a watery texture. Overall: a bit thin and not quite fond of the spice mix in this one.

Hmm, quite different but I dont think it works! Pours dark copper w/ a tan head that leaves little lacing. The aroma is rather soft w/ some subtle hints of caramel. The flavor resembles ice tea. There is no hop presence whatsoever & it doesnt really feel like a beer at all. Im no expert on the style but this isnt my cup of tea. Lol

Flaske: Ovenp bjldeklang var dette klart et skridt op, men stadig forholdsvis ligegyldig og bare drikbar. Ikke nogen stor oplevelse men i det mindste smagte den ikke som at slikke p et stlrr.

Dark ambergolden body with a off-white head which falls like snow. An aroma of dried fruit and malt. A good note of fruit, vanilla and spices. The heavy alcohol makes the beer strong and vinous (madeira-like). OK to a good heavy Christmasdinner.
