A vintage pick-up but not looking too good on the ratings so here goes. A 2014 best by. Into a chalice at cellar temperature. Looks the goods so beaucoup d’éloges on appearance. Deepest ruby and shimmering with a tight, tidy, sheen of off-white foam that laces well. Wow, aroma, whooooo! As a chef I use a compound product in desserts that just has this same or very similar aroma. Cosmetic bouquet of rose water and concentrated strawberry with an odd hit of cocoa. More apt to be a ladies perfume than an ale but not overly offensive. Palate has that same repore. Sweet, but just fights being cloying. Syrupy with a modern dessert ingredient flavour that edges chocolate mousse, strawberry conserve and a musk of rose water. Quite long in the soapy and filmy finish but sits inside this small frame of flavour. No peak, no yeasty notes, no nuances of age or complexity. A light burnt almond and hazelnut praline, an caramel builds (sticking with the product description) but otherwise it seems to skim far too much artificial flavours to be enjoyable. France trip can. Reddy brown with 1/4" white head which dissipates to thin line - decent carbonation. Decent aroma of malts, slight ting on tongue and mouth - little aftertaste but drinkable.

Can from Carrefour, drunk 4/26/15
While I wasn’t expecting the same degree of replication for the canning revolution going on in the US, I was still hoping this would be a decent beer (it wasn’t) based on a higher quality of canning (there isn’t) since I thought I remembered this brewery being decent (it’s not).
Same lifeless, large-bubbled pour creating a large beige head that recedes to nothing. Clear, ruby-auburn body.
Heavy toasted grains in the nose, light metal, perhaps a pinch of earthy hops? Light alcohol vapors with warming. Very little depth or complexity.
Beyond insipid flavor is sweet, and would probably be syrupy but for the wateriness and loose, lackluster carbonation. Hard, filtered texture with toasted malt, ripe berries and caramel sweetness.
Obviously breweries like these don’t make much money off their "better" beers as they are forced to cater to the "can of rocket fuel crowd" and put out this crap. Too bad for the lack of beer culture in France, but if they made a more interesting quality product, they’d probably increase interest in the US market.

25 cl. bottle@home. Biere Brune is not my favourite (liquid brown bread most of it) but this one looked interesting and small enough to make me want to try it. And it was certainly a good example of the variety. Dark in color with a fine light brown head with fine small bubbles. Not much aroma but the one there was reminded me of freshly washed laundry. Rich brown taste - malt and raisins - and a good, long aftertaste. High alcohol content very well integrated. A good Bier Brune, but still not my favorite poison by a long shot.

Jun. ’14. A 0.33 l bottle, I guess this one is Marko’s, thanks for sharing! It poured lightly hazy brown body with medium sized head. A bit stinky sourish infected aroma over some caramel in the background. Flavor was sour, too, not so much, lightly metallic, some dried fruits and caramel here, too. Medium bodied. This one seems to have some potential, but I really feel like it’s an infected batch. Ticking for rerate.

Can from a French supermarket. Pours deep chestnut with a big frothy cream head. Sweet and malty with some spicy citrus overtones. Maybe a little liquorice going on. A touch boozy, but OK.
