Commercial Description:
The Duysters Brewery may well be the smallest commercial brewery in Belgium - annual production of both its beers is only about 650 cases. Loterbol is a crisp blonde ale that is very tasty and mightily satisfying. It drinks much stronger than its 6.8% alcohol by volume would suggest, and tastes a little spicy, though no spices are used in the brewing. The exotic palate of this beer comes from the unique strain of yeast. Duysters Brewery flourishes in the shadow of one of the world’s largest breweries, Interbrew, in the nearby town of Leuven. But there is no mistaking this exquisite hand-crafted brew for the mass-product of the nearby beer factory. ‘Loterbol’ is a Flemish word for a fool or prankster, an allusion to the deceptive smoothness and drinkability of this beer. Selected as one of the fifty best beers in the world by Men's Journal magazine, July 2005.

Yellow/amber color. Fruity, yeasty and floral aroma. Flavor is well balanced between malt sweetness (honey, fruits, sugar), hop bitterness, and spice. Bitter finish.

Bottle from Bottle Trek. Hazy apricot color with a decent white head. Aromas of pale stone fruit, yeast, candi and perhaps malt. Medium body with slightly fizzy carbonation. Flavor is spice, wood, pale fruit, malt, trace of funk. Finish is quite dry with herbs/wood/funk for a little extra bitter. Worth taking time to appreciate.

Lightly hazy gold/orange. Small white head. Nose of sweet malt, candi sugar, light colored fruits, and a subtle spicy twang. Flavor is balanced by estery yeast and earthy, grassy, bitter hops. Also some bready malt. Dry, airy, lightly bitter finish. Medium to medium/full body, well carbonated, yet soft. Very drinkable. Excellent strong blond.

Bottled, BB 10/06. Gushed a bit out of the bottle, but settled nicely into the glass.. slightly hazy medium golden with a short, creamy cap of white head. The aroma was musty and spicy with coriander and a dry, pale Belgian feel to it.. some dusty fruit beneath. The flavor had a slightly stale complexion to it with pale malt and caramel sweetness at the core.. spicy yeast on the edges with a dry, spicy finish. Medium-bodied and decently balanced.. hid the alcohol well. Solid brew.
