3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pigfoot (2267) - Minneapolis, USA - SEP 27, 2004
Appearance: hazy, tarnished gold-to- straw yellow in color, with an enormous helping of foam, taking up most of the glass, taking it’s time to whittle down, bone-white and puffy, leaving lace.
Aroma: spicy, right off, and citric, lemon and orange, yeast in abundance, as well. Alcohol peeks through, too, when you really breathe it in.
Taste: acidity is high here, to match the carbonation, maybe. Sourness is the primary taste, and it dries soon off of the palate. Very odd, quite unlike another I’ve encountered in a Belgian blonde, not as smooth or seamless as I’d expect. Spicy, clovey, citric, and uncompromisingly so. Grabs hold of the tongue and doesn’t let up right away, just gradually fades. Hops are wildly at play, as well, and a bitter undertone.
Body is nearly medium, finish is tangy and brief, ...but I can’t shake whether this is intentional, or perhaps gone bad? Bottle, bought 2 months ago, is good until May of ’05, so that can’t be it, can it?
No, this is how the brew is supposed to be, and I’m just a bit too taken aback by it, that’s all.
Actually, halfway through, it’s much less harsh and the drinkability markedly improves. Maybe decanting the bottle some before consumption would have distanced my tastebuds from that harsh acidity? Who knows, it’s over now, and I a fruitiness opens up, and I’m having no trouble draining the glass.
Quite a remarkable beer drinking experience, chalk it up to Belgium once again!
