Commercial Description:
A darker, slightly sweeter beer than its blond counterpart, Loterbol Bruin is a delicious strong Belgian ale, brewed in tiny batches at Belgium’s smallest brewery. Highly drinkable, even at 8% alcohol, this beer lives up to its name, which translates roughly to ’prankster.’ Unlike most Belgian beers of this strength, Loterbol Bruin is not loaded with candi sugar. It does not want for malty sweetness, but it is superbly balanced with enough hops to stand up to the high alcohol. A remarkable brew, if a difficult one to find . . . we bring in only about 60 cases a year.

Bottle at home. Pours a dark brown color with a solid creamy off-white head. Quite intense aroma of alcohol, dark fruits, some malt, bread and nuts. Lovely balanced flavor with fresh bread, some roasted malt, dried fruits, a little alcohol presence and a very creamy texture and lots of carbonation. Great beer.

2005 Bottle @ Cafe Brussels. Pours pitch black with small tight tan head and leaves lace. Aroma is oxidized, rusty but showing its age well. Dark fruits, dried fruits, raisin, mincemeat, burnt fuzzy peaches and pears. Smooth palate. Alcohol is apparent in the palate. The flavors are somewhat burnt and match the dark dried fruit in the aroma. The beer has held its age very well, and it’s smooth. A nice experience.

BB Nov 2005. Very dark brown. Thin head. Oxidizes earthy, slightly sherryish aroma with some woody notes, hints of treacle and subtle dark fruits. Sweetish, fruity (grape, pear, light berry) with soft dark sugars and some moderate oxidized/sherry character. Fun stuff.

Bottle from Utobeer. Opaque, dark brown with a decent tan head. Sweet aroma of molasses, berry fruit and yeast, with a hint of spice. Flavour was similar, with a full mouth feel and slighlty bitter finish. Smooth, enjoyable drinking.

This 33cl bottle is best before april 2005, opened january 2010 - with only a little "fizz" Aroma: Caramel, port, toffee, clove. Strong aroma. The aroma is very addictive and almost the best thing about this beer Appearance: Clear brown, light brown head quickly dissapearing to a thin film lasts till the end. Taste A bit metallic - fades away during the tasting though. Caramel, port, clove. The clove is dominant in the long aftertaste. Hop bitterness still balancing the beer. Most apparant in the aftertaste. The aftertaste has a little smokey tang to it, barely noticable but it’s there. Little noticable alcohol. The caramel, port and clove melts together to a liquid candy-like taste. Very nice. Quite complex, but could have been more even more complex. Very little oxydation going on despite the ageing. Expected it to have "opened up" a bit more. Palate Lost some carbonation during ageing. Mouthfeel is pleasantly creamy. Overall Quite good. Tt’s holding up remarkably good. I am sure it would easily age for 5 years more - maybe 10. I wish I had more of this.

Pours hazy off-brown color with generous, tight head that is also a brownish colour. Nose is very complex with citrus zest, estery notes, and fresh baked white bread crust. On the palate is a pleasant sweet n sour flavor with more of the pleasant bready taste, mixed fruit, and a tangy spice on the finish. Finish is medium to long and somewhat sour, in a good way.

Pours a reddish brown with a medium head. The aroma is brown sugar with some anise, nutty, and floral notes. The flavor is molasses, licorice, apple, and booze. The flavor is largely nutty and spicy. This is very tasty stuff.
