A darker, slightly sweeter beer than its blond counterpart, Loterbol Bruin is a delicious strong Belgian ale, brewed in tiny batches at Belgium’s smallest brewery. Highly drinkable, even at 8% alcohol, this beer lives up to its name, which translates roughly to ’prankster.’ Unlike most Belgian beers of this strength, Loterbol Bruin is not loaded with candi sugar. It does not want for malty sweetness, but it is superbly balanced with enough hops to stand up to the high alcohol. A remarkable brew, if a difficult one to find . . . we bring in only about 60 cases a year.

2006 bottle, courtesy Retorp. Pours thick reddish brown, with prominent lacing a big frothy white head. Nose has massive amounts of delicious rich fruits, brown sugar, a big yummy dark ripeness. Flavor is very complex, with rich incredible dark sugars, molasses and tons of spices. Full-bodied, very drinkable, and has aged very well. I’m angry at myself for not trying this before.

Very dark brown ruby body topped by a large creamy tan head. A nice looking beer. The aroma is quite different. I was expecting sweet malts and candi sugar instead I get a spicy vinous blueberry aroma. It is really unlike any beer I have ever smelled. The flavor is equally as unique and oh-so good. More vinous and blueberry along with other dark fruits and a touch of acidty. Medium bodied with a full flavored finish that lingers. Damn this is a good one. A real surprise too as I bought only because I had never seen it before. Find it buy it love it!

Powerfull aroma of molasses, yeast and tobacco(?); but also of dried fruit, orange and roasted malts -- complex. Smooth warm mouthfeel. Magnificent brew!! Underrated. Must get more of this.

330 ml [capped bottle, 2003 sampling: Deliah’s Chicago (vintage beer tasting, Feb ‘04)]: Dark cedar, with a dense, light tan foam. Malty aroma with spicy streaks: caramel plums laced with freshly cracked black pepper and anise. Beautifully complex. The sweet fruity malts and lull me into submission just as a peppery/green plant bitterness screams for attention. I can’t help but concede to both. . . and I loved every second.

This brown ale pours with a large white frothy head. The aroma is quite malty and very pleasant, and the flavor is classic (not sour) brown ale. I have tried most of the Belgian brown ales and this is my favorite, even though the (well-concealed) alcohol content is higher than most.

Bottle. Wow! Brown and very dark, with a nice tan head. Only one word for the aroma and that is molasses. And a huge molasses aroma at that. Big malty fruty German Dunkel-like flavor. Take out the fruitiness and it is extremely German Dunkel like. Big dark malt flavors. Roasted malt finish. Don’t know why this is listed at 10% abv when it is only 8%. This is one fantastic brew!

Now this is one tasty beer! Pours a dark brown with a thick, frothy head. Molasses and toffee aroma. Lots going on here in the flavor department: brown sugar, hazelnut, almonds, apricot(?), caramel, cinnamon.... I could go on & on after each sip. Alchohol is present in the sweet finish. Perfect for a cold night by the fire. Loterbol? Yes please.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2007 Beautiful mahogany, light tan head. It has a complex nose: toasty nutty (I swear I smell toasted sesame seeds) fruity malt, and clove. Light but lively carbonation gives way to dark malt that takes its time to develop into coffee with a hint of chocolate and toasted sesame. A hint of banana in there as well as the beer ends in lighter moderate hops. Great Brew!
