E.J. Phair Marzen is a German style amber lager brewed with eight different malts. It is crisp and clean with a wonderful malt character and virtually no bitterness. The term Marzen means March in German and that is when this style is traditionally brewed. Luckily E.J. Phair Marzen is available year round.

Medium orange color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is mild, with touches of malt and grain. A medium bodied marzen. Malts are fruity and sweet, with a very nice malt profile. Hops are mild and maybe a little spicy. This is a very easy drinking, nice tasting marzen. The malt flavors shine through in this very simple, but very nice marzen. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Crisp, clean, nice carmel color, mild nose and malt flavors with some grain tannins. An easy, drinkable beer with plenty of snap.

Pours orange-amber, almost no head, aroma is fruity, yeasty. A bit of a surprise, I found this somewhat tart fruity marzen to be quite pleasant, well rounded and quite drinkable.

Soft munich malt notes on the nose with a touch of caravienne. Clean and caramel forward with some mild nuts and bread. Good conditioning. Soft mouthfeel, semi sweet. Good session Marzen.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear bronze colour. Fruity and lightly buttery. Fairly sweet with medium body and rounded dense mouthfeel. Low bitterness. A well made example of the style where there seems to be a have a lot of effort gone into creating an interesting malt character.

Bottle. Glowing amber color with almost no head (there;’s a thin white head that goes fast). Sweet malt aroma. Crisp is right. Nicely done. Sweet malts and a slight nuttiness. There are background hops for flavor (a touch of spice), but no bitterness. Well put together.

(12 oz bottle: Cost Plus in La Jolla, CA) This is an odd one. It is less malty than I was expecting, and instead, it’s fairly sweet, floral, and oddly enough, surprisingly fruity. While not bitter at all, there’s still a light hops flavor in the background. The flavor remains virtually the same right through to the finish. The nose is sweet, fruity and floral, with vague aromas of malt and hops. Medium bodied, with a lingering sweetness on the palate. Pale amber color. Off-white head pours to an average size, but fades to a wide rim fairly quickly. No lacing to speak of. Not a great Märzen, but it’s pleasant enough if you enjoy your beers on the sweet side.
