Cask, Leicester Fest 07. Amber brown with a small head. Aromas are toffee malts with spices and pine. Flavours are sweet toffee with quite a degree of fruit. Soft malts with some biscuit. Some herbal notes. A well balanced bitter.

A Mes rate:
Cask at the Wenlock Arms. Sweetish aroma. Red brown with very little head. Tart and sweet with plenty of caramel notes. Unexpected bitter hop finish. Slightly unusual but good.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 pivo (2540) - GERMANY - FEB 12, 2006
Murky brown color, fluffy beige head. Doughy, grainy toffee. Tight bitter, but slightly chemical taste. Medium body, gritty mouthfeel. Interesting, but not a good balance overall.

Thanks a lot Chris_o! Nice hazy copper color with a fizzy head. Light malt nose. Light malt and toffee taste that improves as it warms up.

Dark coloured and very smooth on the palate. Fine hoppy finish. Sweet wine notes.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Mungo (2472) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - SEP 22, 2005
BCA (from Tastebuds, Earl Soham; bottled on 11 Aug). Upon opening overwhelming and unlikeable yeast aroma. Once left to condition for a couple of hours this faded leaving nutty roast and crystal malt aromas. Hops are very much second fiddle with a light earthy balance in the finish. The flavour of the malts don’t seem to complement each other with crystal and roast flavours vying for attention. Slightly watery.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Spiesy (2338) - Sydney, Greater London, AUSTRALIA - JUL 1, 2004
Bottled. Deep amber colour with a well form, smooth a shinny white head. Some hops on the nose. More malt than hops in the flavour (only just). Moderately pleasant beer. Thanks to Chris_o for leaving this one behind.

This beer is invariably described by CAMRA and others as overwhelmingly hoppy. Indeed I remember having a pint at the Victoria at Earl Soham a few years ago (and before I started writing tasting notes) that was a strange beast indeed - fruit and astringency in equal measure. However, I think the hops must have been toned down a bit. Certainly starts fruity and has plenty of balancing hops, but nothing overwhelming. In fact, a rather well balanced best bitter. Handpump, Station Hotel, Framlingham, October 2003
