4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 AndrewC (265) - Canterbury, Kent, ENGLAND - JUL 29, 2007
500ml bottle. Bottle conditioned. Made with maris otter & optic pale malted barley and black crushed crystal with Whitbread Goldings variety and East Kent Goldings (according to the label).
Soft feel in the mouth. Dry with subtle flavours of wood shavings, cooked egg white and warm vanilla ice cream hiding behind the dominating roasted malts. The finish is well ballaced between the goldings and the roasted malts. This is an excellently constructed beer with nothing harsh going on. Given that you can only buy this at the shop next to the brewery I wish I’d bought more than 1 bottle!

Cask (Peterborough Beer Festival 2004) 4.2%
Rich brown, small head. Roasted malt aroma. Sweet caramel malt, some chocolate, and a gentle hoppy taste. But that understates things - the taste was beautiful and exceptionally well balanced. Pleasant combo finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 maeib (6637) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - JUN 13, 2005
Bottled. A dark brown "porter" wi th a reddy hue. The aroma is really fruity - oranges and strawberries with lots of hop smells. The taste is also really sweet, fruity and mellow but there is no roastiness chocolate coffee or anything I might expect. A really interesting tasty beer which struggles to meet what I call a porter but is very nice all the same.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 bluekuma (94) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 17, 2007
Bottle-conditioned. Pours a ruddy dark brown with no head. A little roast malt & dark fruit on the nose. Lightly carbonated and light-bodied with sweet roast malt flavours and hints of chocolate giving way to a tart, fruity finish. A flavoursome easy-drinker.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Mungo (2472) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - AUG 24, 2005
Cask conditioned @ Victoria, Earl Soham. Aug 05. Light roasty notes. With fruit and malt more prominent. Full yet refreshing. Intersting blend of smoke and acidity in finish. Whilst I enjoyed this it just seemed to lack either a little more robust depth or fresh zing but sat in the middle.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JorisPPattyn (6730) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - SEP 10, 2007
Hazy, near-black brown; bottled version of B.C.H. Sweet nose, with sweet apples and English hops. Lightly sweet, liquorice, cardboard flavours and precious little hops left. Light body, but very slick. A bit light as a porter, compared to DK/USA porters. But rather attractive easy-drinking one.
