Big Hop IPA – the first of the brews from Pittsburgh’s newest and MICRO-est microbrewery to hit the streets. Truly, a hopped-up American IPA with loads of Centennial and Cascade hops, and just barely enough malt backbone to balance it out. Our flagship brew.

On draft @ Capones with the Mad Indian. Pours orange/copper with a two finger thick off-white head. Aroma of citrus, piney hops, and slight fruit. The flavor is citrus, slight fruit, piney hops, and caramel malts. Good brew. I would have liked a little more of a alcohol kick, or a stronger hoppy presence.

Sampled at Capones on Allagash night with Stegosaurus. Orange/coppery pour. Roasted malt aroma with hints of pine. Blended well but ok for me nothing great.

At the brewery. Pours a golden- orange color with a off white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, caramel, and grass. Flavor is hoppy with notes of grapefruit and citrus. The finish is clean with a lingering hop aftertaste.

On tap, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Pours a slightly hazy dark copper under a small beige creamy head. Nice citrusy hop aroma with a little bit of a floral note and a little bit of doughy malt. Flavor wise, just your basic IPA, light citrusy hops with minimal bitterness. A slight metallic tinge on the finish. Fairly nice soft carbonation with a slight resiny stickiness on the finish. Not sure why they call this "Big" hop, I didn’t really get an especially aggressive hoppiness out of it. Just your basic IPA.

Draught at Capone’s. Very cloudy golden-orange body with a soapy white head. Nice bright citrus and tropical fruit, plus crusty hop aromas. Juicy flavor with notes of grapefruit, toast and a hint of diacetyl. Firm, but mostly clean bitterness. Decent little IPA, despite the excess of particulate matter.

Murky golden amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, citrus, toffee, and floral hops. Taste was bitter, grapefruit, light caramel malts, pine, lightly resiny, with a dry finish.

Medium amber color - lively head. Aroma is sweet with a slight hint of grassy hops. Flavor is also rather sweet, some hop bitterness but not much - a little out of balance, though it’s clean and crisp.

On tap at the Map Room. Dark amber body with off-white head. Nice floral hop aroma. Flavor starts off with some sweet caramel malt with a cool, crisp finish consisting of pine, floral hops, and some grapefruit. IPA is not my favorite style but this is quite enjoyable.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2011 Out of the tap it pours cloudy yellow orange at the Bocktown Bar in the Robinson mall shopping center. Nice hoppy floral aroma. Has some bubbles arising but it does not qualify as lacing. Pretty hoppy taste but not as an IPA of DIPA. Flavor is a little weak compared to other IPAs and I think that may be a benefit since I don’t really care for IPA bitter lingering beers. However, the finish is bitterness that builds as the resolution continues. This is a little better than your typical IPA but for the style, I think IPA lovers may find this without offense. Best IPA I’ve tasted.
