I’ve had varying experiences with this beer. First from a merely aesthetic point of view, I find that I like rauchbiers to be dark, not roasty in flavor, simply dark, some carafa or sinamar, whatever. So this one is a light orange. Once on tap it was slightly plastic-y. Too much phenolic type smoke, like peat smoked malt. In the bottle, maybe as a result of light oxidation, it was tamer, but still smoky, and much more enjoyable. Still, for a local to produce and package a rauchbier of any kind, I’m thankful.

This one poured a pretty clear golden yellow with a big white head. Aroma was smoked peat, german hops, and some east end yeasty tang as well. Flavor was of all burnt rubber, very strange but at the same time intersting and hard to put down.

1L bottle courtesy of PUB’R, the Pennsylvania Underground Beer Railroad, which I am president, CEO, chairman, chief engineer, and conductor of. Pours turbid canary with orange edges. Very turbid pour, with 1-finger white head. Nose is intense smoked malt, hopcitrus, I get lime and some florals underneath. Tastes of smoked malt, with a mid-palate assault of orange marmaladey citrus, floral hops, and black pepper. This one comes off like a tri-hybrid rauch, bier de garde, and witbier, and is very complex and enjoyable.

Sampled on draft at the Pints For Pets brewfest this beer poured a dark amber color with a large soapy off white head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was dryish smoke and bread. The flavor was tangy and bready with a dry smoky bacon presence. The finish was long and dry with smoke and bacon lingering. Medium body. Interesting.
