mj (4975), Colorado, USA Apr 8, 2008 Cask @ Zeno’s. Brown, no head. Mild nose of chocolate malt and bread, but it’s extremely faint and very bland smelling so it’s difficult to judge this one at all. Sadly the flavor isn’t any better - weak, pallid, empty, with a watery texture as well. Disappointing. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 15, 2007 Amber colored with minimal off-white head. Aroma of caramelly malt, nuts, some toffee. Flat taste with heavy maltiness coupled with mid-palate nutty notes and some mild tobaccoey hints. TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2006 06 State College Brew Expo. Pours a brownish golden with a bubbly tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, nut, toasted malt and not much hops at all. Flavors of the same...still no hops :) michael-pollack (2606), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA May 25, 2008 Cask: Aroma of graham crackers, nuts, wood, malts, and moist potting soil. Poured very dark brown in color with a medium to large, thin, rocky, wispy, oatmeal colored head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Lightly sweet flavor. Tastes of nuts, wood, malts, and some chocolate. Medium body. Chewy and chalky texture. No carbonation. Nutty and malty finish. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 17, 2006 Sampled at State College BrewExpo. Dark brown ale with little head. Has a mild, dry bitter aroma and hard to tell if from the hops or some odd dusty grain aromatics. Nice malty taste with light bitter hops. Mild nutty finish and after, with watery overall body. Decent, but not one of the better brown ales. kmweaver (2398), Sebastopol, California, USA Apr 5, 2008 Cask @ Zeno’s. Pours a slightly watery, dark brown color; minimal head with a perimeter of medium-sized bubbles. Basic tea and wet malts in the aroma; not a lot here at all. Basic, watery malts and a slight tea-like astringency; again, reserved and watery throughout; very bland brown. Medium finish, which shows more flavor than the rest of this: chocolate, saltine crackers, and some lingering tea. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 3, 2007 Updated: Jul 11, 2008Oops, somebody at the Bocktown got this tap handle mixed up with Corsendonk, Corsendonk Pater (Abbey Brown Ale)-----Unbelievable bargain! Pleasantly flat. No, seriously, this is like Corsendonk with all the complexities, but much better in price. Definately top of the style. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 29, 2007 Sampled on draft this beer poured a mahogany color with a medium sized light brown head. The aroma was malty, roasty and bitter. The flavor was bitter, roasty and nutty malt mix with very subtle hops and a hint of smoke underneath.
