3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013 bottle. Pours a hazy reddish amber with a dissipating soapy head that becomes fine. The aroma is of sweet carmel malts, butter toffee, booze, fruit and spice notes from the hops. In the flavor I noticed the sweet carmel malts, butter taste, bitterness, and booze. The finish was of malts, booze, bitterness, and a nice dryness. Overall this hit my palate but did so pleasantly.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A - Golden amber with a 2 finger creamy red head. Resilient head, doesnít fade.
S - Smells like a copper penny with a nice level of American hops. I get a little cardboard and caramel
T - Damn. Overall, itís a nice tasting beer with a nice healthy happiness, maltiness and bitterness throughout. But the copper penny ruins it completely.
M - Medium body, not much carbonation. bitter finish
O - Overall, Iím pretty disappointed.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml bottle. 2009 vintage blue wax top. Clear crimson red with big soapy head. Nose is old hops, caramel malts, chocolate notes with a slight off note. Flavor is sweet up front with a metallic / copper taste. Oxidized notes... Big oxidized notes, with sweet caramel. Ummm, boy this was a big disappointment.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
2010 bottle shared by cptnspeed1...thanks Brad! - Pours rosy amber with a thin tan head. Pretty hot nose, with a big malty sweetness. Taste has a little sweet maltiness, dark bread, and light buttery notes. Itís bitter, with a lightly grassy finish. Thick and slick in the mouth, with very little carbonation. Interesting, and very little trace of the heat, but this wasnít as good as I had hoped.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2009 bottle acquired in a trade a while back. Iíve probably had this a couple years or even more. Opened just slightly chilled; very close to room temp. The pour is a deep ruby-mahogany color with a fluffy tan head on top that leaves some surprisingly nice lacing. The aroma is full of toffee and caramel, with plums, licorice, and cherries to give it a fruity element. This is rich stuff; a lot of malt flavor, but very smooth going down. The body is slick. Itís sweet and fruity; candied fruity notes of cherry skin, raisin, and mixed tropical fruit cocktail. Some earthy undertones with a ever so slight toasted malt presence. Thereís just a touch of boozy-alcohol sting in the finish to remind you that itís an 11%+ beer. Mostly itís just warming without being overly alcoholic. I was happy to find that this 4 year old beer has held up quite well with no oxidation. Iíve never had it fresh but Iíd bet that age did this some good. With that said, while enjoyable, this seems like a fairly basic barleywine for such a special release. Iím not sure I need to trade for, or seek out another bottle anytime soon.
