4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
At my place with Taylor, Justin, Kristen, and Matt. Pours rose red, no head. Aroma is fruity figs, nice and delicious, complex. Taste is super smooth for a barleywine, tasty, almost cherry, hint of sweetness, still very true to the style.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared by Bruce. Aroma is so barleywine. Dark fruits, bitter grass, prunes, raisin skins, and malt. Pours brown with not too much carbonation (I’ve heard of the flatitude). Taste is nice and balanced with a good pine/grass hop presence but still plenty of raisin, prune, and toffee tastes. Just a perfectly contructed B-wine. No more, no less.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: SEP 28, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Ed. 2010 bottle. Muddled, swampy copper with no head, just a timid, khaki collar. Aroma full of sweet caramel, buttery toffee, floral hops, sticky prunes & raisins, & a good sized dose of anise on the tail end. Taste is full of more smooth & slick caramel, toffee, & light butterscotch. Good English hop bite; dirty, spicy, floral just a bit. Lingering hints of earthiness, anise, & toffee in the finish. A bit thin & light bodied considering the style & ABV. A good barleywine, no doubt, but not mind-blowing by any means.
Bottle: 2008a batch, the "re-brew". Again, thanks to Ed. The additional two years is noticeable here in the form of slight oxidation onset. A bit of stale paper & cardboard is beginning to set in, lingering in the aftertaste. Otherwise, it hasn’t evolved much from the 2010 bottle in terms of normal aromas/flavors.
Bottle: 2013 batch. Bottle 477/1600. Best bottle of Gratitude I’ve had, for sure. Freshest, too, so maybe that’s the key. About a year old, a little less. Lots of sweet prune & earthy, dirty hops with a nice bitterness. Raisin, hint of anise, sweet caramel. Lingering bitterness with a strong hoppy character in the finish. Bumping up the score a few points.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 Bottle. Ruddy-brown body with a thin off-white head and sparse lacing. Caramel, toffee, prune, earth, leather, a little sherry and general sweet cereals. Medium to full bodied with slick, soft carbonation, slightly boozy with decent sweetness. Nice to see this return after the two flatitude vintages.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(Bottle) pours deep reddish brown with a small head. The aroma is balanced with caramel and fruits. Creamy and friendly alcohol-ish on the nose. Touch of cinnamon apples. The flavour is medium sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic with notes deep caramel and fruits. Not over the top, just a robust maltiness. The mouthfeel fat and round with a light carbonation. Som hops on the finish. Near full bodied.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle received in trade. Thank you pushkinwow! 2010 vintage. Pours hazy amber with a very small bubbly goldenish offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet, malty and fruity with biscuits, caramel, dates, raisins, oatmeal cookies, cereal, hay, caramelized apples, toffee, brazil nuts, caramelized almonds, prunes and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter and malty with biscuits, caramel, hay, riasins, prunes, dates, charred wood, caramelized apples, marzipan covered baked pears, caramelized almonds, toffee and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, slightly flat, round, slightly viscous and medium to full bodied. finish is sweet, bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, biscuits, hay, grapefruit rinds, raisins, dates, charred wood, baked pears and warming alcohol. Very solid mellow and tasty barley wine. No mr fancypants barrel aged complicasaurus. It takes a lot of skill to make something as solid as this…

2005, thanks to David!
I’ve had many a vintage of Gratitude, but never 2005 until now, and I must say the beer has aged remarkably well. Firstly, there was still "ample" carbonation by the standards of a Barley Wine, even a fresh one. The oxidation is definitely less than you’d expect of a typical BW bottling, but gives a nice sherry characteristic to things without any of the watery texture issues. Slightly chestnutty with lots of interesting sweet fruit notes and a hint of leathery character. Excellent, beautiful beer. It’s a shame I’ll almost certainly never get to drink it again, but in my experiences basically every batch of this beer ages well. So grateful (hehehe get it?) to have tried this.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, 2008 vintage. Red/copper liquid with minimal off-white head. Aroma of raw sugar, caramel, toffee, port wine and dried fruit. Quite complex. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with notes of raw sugar, toffee, plums and sweet alcohol. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Really viscous and sticky. Great barley wine, very balanced and complex.
