hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 16, 2008 on tap at kelly’s. cloudy, almost opaque brown honey with a thick, dense, off white head that’s slow to fade and leaves a splendid lacing. huge smells caramel malts, with a fairly strong peach scent, as well as big citrus hops with grapefruit and pineapple notes. more huge caramel malts in the taste, a bit of a smokey flavor, with notes of cherry, bread, wood, and more citrus hoppiness. quite sweet on the finish, but never cloying, with a moderate hop bitterness to back it up. thick and chewy in the mouth, rather sticky, lightly carbonated. a very well done barleywine. almost what i think of when i picture the style, with a few new twists (the peach notes were surprising) thrown in.
mcbackus (621), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Aug 20, 2008 bottle 2006 courtsey of beerlando: pours a good caramel colour and a nice off white head. aroma is sweet and fruity odd caramel and flower aroma, slight candy also. flavour is a bitter start with a very sweet malt a very herbal dryness very odd to me. Beershine (1207), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 20, 2008 At Vero. Murky pour is reddish-brown. Smells chewy and grainy--a textural smell. Good balance. Sweet, crusty malts. Toasty and really bread crusty, which is a flavor I enjoy. Tastes nicer than it smells. Shag (1767), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA Aug 18, 2008 A dark amber apperance with a white head. The aroma is alcohol, cherries, brown sugar, and molasses. The flavor is rather sweet and oakey with some citrus, cherries, and dark fruits. Seems more English style to me but alas a good one! smith4498 (332), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2008 Bottle courtesy of beerlando. 2006 batch. Pours hazy amber with off white head. Aromas of sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits. Malty caramel bread flavor with some hops coming through. Alcohol is barely noticeable for 11.5% ABV. Full body with minimal carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. A nice American style barley wine. Beerlando (1237), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2008 2006 vintage, bottle #525/1300. The body is a cloudy, dusky, orange-brown color. A frothy, cream colored head leaves copious amounts of micro-spot lacing behind on the glass. The aroma is ultra-creamy for a barleywine, with big, malty notes of toffee, caramel, oak, and smooth vanilla. Citrus hops linger in the background, but have mostly given way to the will of the velvety malts. Flavors continue this trend, as chewy, creamy caramel and toffee are spiced with easy going, aged-oak and vanilla notes. The hop billing is again there for balance and spicing only, its acidic bitterness long since mellowed. The palate proves to be smooth, chewy, and substantial, with moderate carbonation. This drinks incredibly light for a monster brew, the alcohol barely noticeable. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.
