3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Big ol’ swingtop from Capone’s, Norristown. Big, lively ruby pour, with a sticky rocky head and tons of retention. Has the look and the aroma of a big Gouden Carolus beer. But the taste is a bit fresher, younger, and more fruity than that perhaps. Huge malty flavors with touches of toffee and molasses, almost like it’s crossed with an old ale. Nice beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted on 5/4/11 from a 1L flip-top bottle sent to me in a trade. Pours cloudy opaque extremely dark amber with an average beige head that recedes to a thin, even layer of lace. The nose is raisin and fig dried fruits with sweet brown sugar, molasses, and a hint of maple syrup. The flavor is sweet brown sugar, maple syrup, and molasses up front, moving to the more dried fruit raisin and fig, and a hint of burnt bitterness. The body is full and oily with average carbonation and a long maple, raisin, and fig finish, with a bit of alcohol heat.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Much thanks to an awesome BA who sent me one being that it is my favorite style. I wasn’t disappointed the1 liter swing top was split between friends into snifters we were greeted with a slight white head that faded fast leaving a small ring of bubbles around the glass. The body was a classic dark brown to black. The aroma of a farm house yeast was the first thing I noticed then I got some sweet dark fruit and caramel came thru. Flavor wise I thought this brew was quite interesting a sweet dark farmhouse I thought it was very reminiscent of a red wine flavor wise. The mouthfeel was a tad light for me I wished for more body. To me it was light and fizzy. Don’t get me wrong it worked but not true to my expatiations of the style.
Overall I like the brew but not a strong dark in any way. It really was more like a hybrid to me.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle:   Heavier shade of brown, frothy off-white head, decent lacing.   Strong spiced bready aroma, its almost like a damn fruit cake.   Fig/dates, some clove and nutmeg.   Intriguing at least.   Whoa, that is pretty cloying with its sweetness.   Too heavy in fact, and its extremely bready.   Seems like an Imperial Belgian Dubbel in that its so thick and heavy, sweet, and bready.   Glad I am sharing this one, because to try and drink an entire liter of this would be torture.   Not a bad beer, but its almost like it tried too hard.   Thanks Dan!

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured into a pint glass as I didn’t know the style beforehand. Shared 1L bottle with a buddy.
4.0 A: Relatively clear medium/dark brown color. Two fingers of creamy/frothy hybrid head with average retention and not much lacing.
4.5 S: Interesting to say the least. Peppery spiciness, semi-sweet chocolate and toffee, and graininess like a good Oktoberfest. Also a light hay funkiness. Very pleasant.
5.0 T: Interesting taste as well. Sweet toffee and caramel. Slight funkiness with peppery yeastiness. Some milk chocolate and the slightest touch of sourness. A touch of alcohol as well.
4.5 M: Thicker medium body. Good carbonation. Lots of creaminess. Very good here.
4.5 D: This is a winner. Super complex with lots of great flavors. Goes down very easy. I also think it may be a new style: "imperial dark saison".
