Malty and spicy goodness. Pours a cloudy brown. Very appealing. Slightly astringent taste with the high alcohol.

Transfer from BA review on 4-4-12 - Served in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Pours a mahogany color with a medium off white head. The head faded to give a moderate amount of lacing. Smell – Roasted malts with little aromas a chocolate and coffee. There is a very nice spiciness in the aroma and a light piney hop aroma present as well. Taste – A nice roasty malt flavor is at the base of this beer and is present throughout the whole taste profile. With the malt flavor, the flavor starts out a little on the sweeter side with the spices detected in the nose mixing with a caramel and toffee sweetness. As the taste advances so too does a little bit of hoppy bitterness. The bitterness comes mainly from a pine hop flavor but also from a small amount from the coffee and cocoa. Mouthfeel – The body is slightly above average and the carbonation is slightly below normal. The body allows the complex taste profile to really coat the mouth with the lower carbonation level letting all those flavors really soak in. Overall – A nice roasty holiday brew. The spice and roasty malt mixed with the light pine hop all combine quite nicely.

Draught at East End. Poured dark brown with light tan head. Licorice aromas. Loads of winter spices in flavor, finishes well.

dark pour from draft, definite spicy malt taste. Also flavors of nuts, roasty, cereal, thick feel. Some sweetness creaps in, but I think it’s because of the higher abv. Good brew for the winter months.

Sample at the brewery. Pours a deep murky brown with thick tan head. Nose of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate and piney hops. Sweet and roasty with some hop bitterness in the finish

UPDATED: JAN 21, 2013 Draft. Poured deep, thoroughly muddy brown with a smallish tan head. Aroma and flavor very roasty, lots of malt, a bit nutty, some light spice. Medium mouthfeel. Tasty and drinkable.

4oz pour at the Pittsburgh Public Market. Pours a fairly dark, deep brown with some thin, white head. Nice nose, nutty, lightly toasted bread, some lemon, a little hop pellet. Flavor was very nice as well, some hop bitterness, pine, lemon zest, crunchy cereal grains, toasted bread, very light coffee grounds. Extremely well balanced flavor. Full bodied, dry finish. A great take on a Winter beer.

From a grower from a friend, (thanks Rob) Pours a nice 2 finger head. Really nice lacing. Nice and roasty toasty burnt malt bitter finish. Hops in the nose, not so much in the taste. Dark red in color. Easy to put down a growler in an hour or so as long as you don’t have to drive anywhere! There is no alcohol in the taste or finish but it presents its self after the 4th glass.

Brown-red, tan cover. Aroma is lots of coffee, cold steeped grounds, not too roasty, some caramel. Taste is the same, this one really surprised me with a mix of coffee, some dark fruitiness, candy, toffee.
