From a bottle. Very attractive pour - cloudy orange with a foamy lid. The aroma is yeasty with a touch of fresh fruit. The taste is a drag, however: sour grapefruit juice flavors clashing with hop bitterness, and not much sweetness to smooth things out. This KSP is a bilious concoction, and is not ready for prime time. There is a good chance my bottle was contaminated.

Found this at Wine World and saw "hoppy" twice in the description so I gave it a whirl. 12oz bottle. A gusher upon cracking the cap. The pour was a hazy orange amber color. Two fingers of thick white head. Lots of carb action in glass. Smell of light caramel and sweetness. Taste was moderately bitter with notes of caramel up front and the simcoe on the back. Overall, not a bad pale ale but needs less carbonation and some work on the flavor.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2012 Location: 12 oz bottle from State Line, 4/13/12

Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, some crystal malts, caramel, yeast, and a little bit of earth
Appearance: This bottle was a HUGE gusher! Once it finally settled down (which took a decent amount of time), it poured an unclear copper-orange with a big, thick foam of off-white head that leaves a lot of glass
Flavor: The taste is mid-plus sweet, malty, some light metallic flavors, ending with a light hop bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, and it has a pretty decent drinkability, with a soft-to-average carbonation
Overall Impression: Only the 10th rater of this one, I personally hadn’t seen their stuff anywhere before, so I’ll assume they don’t have a ton of distribution (maybe on within MD?). Anyway, this isn’t a great beer, but it is a drinkable one. This bottle gushed all over the place, which was rather annoying, but the pour turned out to fine after that. Also, the hops are a bit lacking for the style, and what is there, is a little too metallic, but despite that, I still found something solid about this one.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2011 lightly sweet nose, light caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, lots of caramel, just a touch of citrus. Would be under hopped as an amber ale.

Heathen (1243) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JUN 17, 2011
THOUGHTS: Not bad, but not great either. A little British. Too syrupy and too metallic. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy, medium to dark copper with a large, off-white head that mostly diminished, but kept a decent sheet and left barely fair lacing. The aroma had moderate caramel malt and light to moderate lemon and metallic hops. The initial flavor was light to moderately sweet and moderately bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderate to rather bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel malt, nutty malt, slightly toasted malt, citrus piney and resinous hops, metallic hops, lemon and metal, candy, and herbal hops. The medium body was pretty much syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear amber, with a nice head of tight, small bubbles, tan in color, that really stands up. Nose of malt, earth, and....nuts. Wonderful mouthfeel, very silky, almost chewy. A nice, dry hop flavor with malt in back. Wow, 7.5% ABV? This could be deadly. Nice job, from downereontheeashurnshore, hon!

Blind tasting on 09/26/2010. Clear copper amber body with a medium rocky off-white head. Caramel and light malt aroma with no real hop notes. Dry caramel flavor with a big bitter background. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Elwood (1967) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - JUN 13, 2010
Serving: Draft at a restaurant right after you cross over the Bay Bridge.
It pours a deep copper color with a small, foamy, white head. The nose is light and a bit fruity with some notes of grain. The flavor has a solid bitter backbone to go with notes of grain, florals, pale malt sweetness, and a touch of earthy hops. Light to medium in body with average carbonation and a long, bitter finish. Not a bad daily drinker but nothing earth shattering. Completely surprised to find out it is 7.5%.

Man alive. Bought a 6 pack after my last visit. I thought it was good on tap it’s was even better in the bottle. Great malt in the front. A little punch of the Simco in the back of the toung and then there is the Cascade. Very well balanced. Keep it coming!

On draft at the brewery. Poured deep copper with an off-white head that left a touch of lacing. Citrusy, piney flavor. A bit of a tongue stripping resinous finish. Suprisingly somewhat malty. ESB’s best offering to date.
