Alengrin (2863) - BELGIUM - AUG 10, 2014
Export version of the infamous biscuit beer Ultra de Noël, with a thick, moussy, yellowish white head and orange blonde, vaguely misty robe. Sweet aroma, opulently decorated with biscuit, plum loaf, gingerbread, caramel candy, banana, overripe peaches, ginger powder, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, dried orange peel and a sharp meaty smell reminiscent of meatloaf or even chicken broth. Very sweet taste of honey and ’speculaas’, caramel syrup, soft and mellow mouthfeel, sourish accent, sweetish spices, medium carbonation, finishing a bit dryish due to not too well-hidden alcohol. Original but clearly not to everybody’s taste.

Een speculaas-bier met een zeer uitdrukkelijke smaak, veel mensen zullen dit niet lusten, maar ikzelf vond het zalig.

Bottle from Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Aroma is of yeasty, and a strong Heinz cream of tomato soup. Not exactly appetising. Taste is of chocolate, tonnes of cinnamon. Far too sweet! Pretty poor. Sickly. I couldn’t finish this one.

Bottle @ De Zytholoog, Adegem. Brown colour with a lot of big particles (cookie?), some white foam. Soft carbonation. Very sweet aroma of cookies, ginger bread, speculoos, cinnamon, brown sugar and spices. Light bitterness in the aftertaste. Strange beer.

Bottle at The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Biscuit aroma - unsurprisingly. Does indeed taste like a cookie - or at least one of those biscuits that is served with a coffee. There is some bitterness, which slightly offsets an otherwise very sweet (obviously) cinnamon and sugar experience. Rich and flavoursome.

Geruch nach Anis, Zimt und Desinfektionsmittel. Im Geschmack selber zu flach. Kaum Bitter zum Ende. Bleibt die Zimtbombe. Zu viel davon.

33cl bottle from Belgium Beers. A bit of a gusher. Thick creamy white head. Cloudy amber pour. Too sweet but it does taste of cookies. I’m on the fence on this one due to the mini gushing and the bad appearance

Bottle at Craig’s. Spice is a bit overpowering, cinnamon, cloves, sweet toffee.

330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, amber colour, some tiny chunks floating around; average to huge, frothy to macro-pored, diminishing, off-white head. Sweet-ish, sugary aroma, Xmas-spicy, some biscuit. Taste is sweet, notes of biscuit and Xmas spices, lots of cinnamon, a touch of nutmeg and ginger. I can’t deny, I like ’Spekulatius’, even if they’re "liquid".
