1.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 YaoDrinker (1) - JAPAN - APR 23, 2012 does not count
After reading the other comments, I wonder if I got a bad batch, but the beer I had had a oddly disgusting aroma and taste. Hard to describe, but almost a corn taste that did not belong. I have enjoyed numerous beers from Echigo, and this one was a large disapointment for me.

Can from Yamaya discount store. Heavy smoke aroma. Pretty copper color, half-inch light tan head, fine & rapidly rising carbonation. Smoked malt and light sweet flavors, a bit metallic. A tinge of bitterness in a very short finish. Thin body. Slightly astringent. This is a decent smoked beer from Japan’s oldest (and that’s not saying much, of course) microbrewery. Much more interesting than most of their beers.

Much better than it has any right to be from this brewery. Huge smoke everywhere. Ok not scherlenkerla territory but much more forceful than anything I have come accross in Japan. Quite rich and a little underattenuatted, but these are small quibbles for such an impressive stab at a difficult style. Hats off.

Can, which sprayed quite a bit on opening. Very nice smoky aroma, rich and Bambergesque! Nice bacon and smoked salmon. Shiny orange amber color with a huge head. Looks nice. Very smoky flavor, tasts like met has been added, much too sweet, with smoked caramel and a somewhat muddy finish. Smokiest Japanese rauch yet, for sure. Nice rich body. Good. Could be somewhat cleaner and less sweet, but decent stuff.
