junon (119), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA Apr 8, 2008 Wow. When I think about great beer makers I dont really think of Japan. However this Stout stands with the best Ive had. You can smell that theirs a bit more alcohol in this than your typical Guinness. With that said Echigo Stout tastes like a beer and not rubbing alcohol. Smoked and roasted. One of the major factors I consider when rating Stouts and Porters is palate where many and popular beers fall flat. Echigo Stout fortunately does not feel like pure water with black food colouring. Good job from the land of the rising sun.
bhensonb (2735), Woodland, California, USA Jul 26, 2008 Bottle from Healthy Spirits in San Francisco. Near opaque brown color with a slight tan head. Sort of tinny dark roasted malt aroma. Flavor is strange spice/herb followed by dark roasted malt, then going back to a strong spice type statement. Never had anything like it. Under that is some coffee. Finish is refreshing and unusual. Very drinkable. Pleasant surprise. Almost like bay leaf or something similar. Enniskillen (1532), Port Angeles, Washington, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottle says 7%. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasty, with milk chocolate, cream, and light alcohol. Taste is a interesting roastiness, with light coffee accent, caramel, lightly watery. WeeHeavySD (1564), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jul 4, 2008 12ozer, label says 7% from Holiday Wine Cellar prob a rip on price but I saw it and thought what the hell. Pours blackish with a 1finger tan head. Dry malty nose. Sweet semi dead taste, of roasted malt. Eh. Crit (2221), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jun 25, 2008 Deep brown, small brown head. Brown sugar nose.Light sweet start, light roast, light hops , lightly metallic.
Lacks body.
For the $5.95 price tag this is a rip off
RCL (973), Boston, Massachusetts, USA May 21, 2008 Highly underwhelming. Light metal in the aroma. Very metallic flavor. Overwhelms any roasted flavor that might be there.
