3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black with a medium beige head. Roasted malts and coffee in the nose. Light in the palate, with a strong dark malt character and hints of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. Sticky, soft carbonation, quite tasty. A very decent classic stout.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, husks, dark chocolate), with a hint of berries. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, husky. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
A rather industrial, simple, grainy-husky beer. Since I got this in Maui I feared it would be badly oxidized, esp. considering dark beers show oxidation a lot more readily, but to my surprise there was no trace of cardboard in either the nose or aftertaste. Too bad it’s not a better beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Yamaya in Ashiya.
Aroma: Charred/heavy roasted coffee beans, rich dark chocolate.
Palate: Light-Medium bodied and very smooth with pleasant mouthfeel.
Flavor: Rich chocolate with smoky burnt, somewhat bitter coffee. Some bready character on the mid-palate.
Comment: Good, though I would like the bodied not to have thinned out so quickly. A fuller, richer body, like Tazawako’s Dark Lager, would earn it several more points.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
L: pours a dark cola brown with a tiny head that was gone quickly. S: a one-dimensional aroma of rich roasted malt, perhaps a hint of chocolate. T: starts off quite aqueous but that dark rich malt creeps in. Some sweetness.
F: low carbonation, light feel but medium-strength flavour. A malt bill more like a foreign stout, gentle hopping.
O: I remember this more fondly a year or so back, perhaps my palate now detects the lack of complexity. Decent cheap local stout though.
