COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Spica is the brightest star in the constellation Virgo. This Lager is brewed in the Un-filtered Kellerbier style. Pale malt is used exclusively to give the beer a nice malt body and light golden color. Sterling hops add a rich herbal character. The yeast left in the beer works with the hops to add a nice spicy flavor.

The bottle I just bought just says "pilsner," not "hefepils" but this appears to be the same beer with a new label. Aroma is malty with notes of biscuit / white bread, and a soft clove / banana fruitiness. Flavor is lightly but noticeably hopped, with notes of sweet corn on the initial finish, and a nice bitterness on the lingering finish. Very palatable, nice and medium bodied, refreshing, but not watery. Good sustaining white head. Very nice.

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Raleigh (Triangle Town Center). Bottled October 21, 2015. Yellowish-orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of damp pale malt with notes of light citrus peel and wet grass. Taste is good with Earthy hops, faint lemon zest, and pale malt. Finish is clean, crisp, and mildly spicy. Great example of the style.

10 oz draft served in a stemless wine glass at the Brewery in Portland, Oregon. The pour is a clear golden with a white head that coats the glass with lace. The aroma is fresh cracker malt paired nicely with spicy grass hops. The taste is the nose, with fresh cracker malt and the spiced hope, and also adds an interesting herbal note which I liked and a general malt huskiness which I did not. The palate is medium to light bodied with an unfiltered mouthfeel and a mineral herbal dry finish. Fresh and tasty.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2016 Draft at the brewery. Clear and still gold with a small and fine white head. Aroma impression is malt husks, saw dust, faint lemon, faint herb, with quiet chemical off-notes. Medium light body, lightly sweet, strongly bitter, moderately astringent. Pretty poor ingredient expression and unclean presentation.

Bottle is lemon-y, musty, cheese-like (old), pale malt is crackers, faint toast; medium-light bodied but lush and firm in the mouth, lightly sweet, lightly syrupy, excessively bitter, green, astringent and raw in the finish.

Bomber.

Cloudy pour, absurdly large foamy head -- holding baroque mountainous shapes -- no matter how hard to I try to pour without it. When I finally get to the beer (a straw might have helped) it’s quite nice. Spicy hop aroma with some unexpected dust, flavors bring an abundant and tasty hop base. Pilsner like, rich full bitterness, not all that much of the hefe bananas going on. Dang, I really like this one. A nice beer and an extra bonus point for being out of the box. There’s a truism that US craft brewers just hop the shit out of things and then you can’t tell they suck -- and while this veers in that direction, this is far more than a cheap hack. It’s a creative and delicious beer.

A very refreshing beer that is a little more hoppy than it’s IBU rating. Found it at Grocery Outlet in Lincoln City, OR.

On tap @ Ecliptic. Hazed golden colored beer with a white head. Bready and grainy up front with a fair bit of grassy hop. Somewhat fruity and estery as well. There’s a fair bit of grassy and earthy bitterness to this one. Maybe a light herbal quality as well. But mostly, this is just kind of sweet, griany, and fairly estery.

At the brewery as part of the RGSG. A draft pour this was a cloudy golden color\ with a white head. Nose of grassy hops. Medium plus in body. Smooth mouth feel. Flavor is rich and the grassy hops are strong. Finish is quite bitter. Nice brew.
