3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Mahogany brown with tan head than thins but laces well. Malt and coffee aroma. Taste quite sweet also nutty with chocolate coffee finishing roasty bitter. Low carbonation. Thin to medium mouthfeel. It is not bad if you are a brown ale fan but a little too sweet.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled, 500ml from Beers of Europe, Norfolk. Deep brown with cream head. Quite a sweet start to this with a nutty aside, like a Cadbury’s whole nut bar, there is a chocolate note within the malt, which then complicates to a husky coffee. This is all bound together by the sweetness though, which dominates a little for me. Good though.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Tucker’s Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon.
Cellar temperature and into a snifter. Rather sad pour resulting in a headless, lifeless, oily looking and murky cola brown; points off there. The aroma is reminiscent of Kopiko candy, hazelnut liqueur, vanilla beans, mahogany timber and varnish, fresh marzipan and a barrel load of mixed, freshly roasted nuts, burdy-nums. Switches gear in the mouth. Tannins, souring malts and light yeasty acidity define it from the norm in the back. Heavily roasted and rich, darker malts otherwise dominate the mid-palate. Lightly roasted coffee, cola beer, cellar must, wood varnish, it tastes of an Old ale of days of old. So long, malty, tannic and rich is the finish, nice depth, a little tobacco and smoke builds. This is deliciously complex for a simple ale. The body quite light and the carbonation all but not evident allows the fluid to simply float on the palate. I would have given a higher rating but appearance is definitely accountable. Lovely, a brew I would love to try fresh after bottling. (50cL, BBE 08/13)

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
[500ml bottle from Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbott] Pours dark brown with a negligible head and no carbonation. Tia Maria aroma. Sweet black coffee continues into the flavour, balanced well against the bitterness of burnt roasted malt. Some chocolate and cough mixture in the finish. Very smooth and easy to drink - the alcohol is (dangerously) not apparent at all. Good stuff.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Appearance: Dark chestnut brown in colour with a small off-white head, good lacing. No visible carbonation.
Aroma: Nutty roasted malts, with a hint of coffee and chocolate. Noticeable hops, with slight burnt aromas.
Taste: Bitter hops on the palete at first. There are clear nutty flavours, roast chestnuts. The malts are toasty, and warming, providing chocolate flavours.
Mouthfeel: Quite heavy in body, with a clinging oily texture.
Drinkability: A good classic ale from a quality independent brewery. They have managed to provide an ale with brilliantly balanced flavours, and a moreish quality.

Comments: Tired and flat, uncomplicated, tobacco infested brown ale that has little positive to offer.
