COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
No other beer shows off what malts can do in a beer better than porter. Certified Organic Porter uses a complex blend of five malts that compliment and highlight one another in a harmonious mixture. Only one addition of imported Pacific Gem hops is used to provide a balancing bitterness without introducing any other hop character. While decidedly in the robust porter category, Certified Organic Porter has none of the harsh character people often associate with dark ales. Instead, what one finds is a rich, smooth beer with suggestions of chocolate and just a hint of coffee. So smooth and malty, this porter will convert even the non-dark beer drinker.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a pretty small head. I found this one to be rather heavy on the roasted malts, but in a very inviting way. The beer itself was extremely smooth and easy on the palate, though it kept up that robust malty and roasted character. Great porter.

This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown color with a one and a half white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute in a concave fashion. The lacing sticks finely to the sides of the glass. The smell has a nice sharp robust roasty coffee blended nicely with some light chocolate. The taste has a smooth rolling flavorful blend of coffee to chocolate with a nice light maltiness just rolling underneath it all. Thereís a decent rich smooth coffee to chocolate aftertaste that leads to a nice smooth sticky finish. On the palate, this one sits about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation is fairly low in this beer but still good for the style and for me. Overall, wow, what a nice Porter. Organic or not, I donít care, Iíd have this again.

Pours black with a quickly fading head. Nose shows some chocolate, a little roasted malt, some faint coffee. Appetizing. Relatively subtle flavours, some roast and soft liquorice but little else. A bit of acidity from the roast. Nice moderate carbonation.

Bottle. A dark brown beer with a beige head thatís soon less than a coat. Aroma of mocha and dark berries. Rather thin. Fairly dry with cocoa, Milo, some dark fruits, little bitterness, slightly astringent at the end. Some OK malty things going on, but itís all a bit vague and athematic (unless "organic beers often lack presence" is a theme).

On tap at Eel River. Appearance: 2 fingers light brown head, dark brown color, good lacing, medium cloudiness. Aroma: chocolate, roast light coffee, light floral. Palate: full body, soft carbonation, slightly dry finish. Taste: sweet throughout with very light bitter at end. Overall, unique, good balance, enjoyable.

Eel River Certified Organic Porter has an extremely thin, beige, cola-type, fizzy head, an opaque, dark, red-brown appearance, some visible bubbles, and suspended particulate matter, and no lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, chocolatey, dark-roasted barley malt, with a touch of coffee. Taste is of all that, with a slight vegetable note. Mouthfeel is light to medium and a bit powdery, and Eel River Porter finishes dry, powdery, rich, and mellow. Overall, this is quite good. RJT

UncleKorm (730) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - FEB 7, 2014
Bomber bottle poured a clear dark brown hue w/ a medium tan head diminishing to a ring w/ lacing. Moderate malty aromas. Initial favor is moderate sweet w/ a faint bitter finish. Tastes are medium roast malts, lime, citrus, chocolate and cola. Medium bodied, lively carbonation, and watery mouthfeel.

Pours a thin tan head on a light brown body. Almost no head retention. The aroma is roasted malt. Mild, but nice. The taste is well balanced, roasted malt, lemon bitterness and chocolate roll around together. The texture is pretty smooth with low to moderate carbonation. Aside from the initial poor appearance, this is a good porter.
