As Americaís first certified organic brewery, Eel River Brewing always celebrates Earth Day (April 22nd) to raise awareness about how easy it is to become sustainable. By taking small steps as individuals, together we can make big changes. To celebrate Earth Day in 2011, Eel River produced a specialty double IPA: Earth Thirst.

Like all of Eel Riverís brews, Earth Thirst is organic and brewed sustainably. Brewed with over three pounds of hops per barrel and finishing out at 8.2% ABV, this is a strong, hoppy beer! Cascade and Centennial hops give this double IPA a heavy floral aroma and citrus flavor. What makes this beer unique is that it uses the highest quality, all organic ingredients - all from the Pacific Northwest.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of all foam finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were and left behind a hazy orange brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was hoppy. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The mild flavor contained notes of hops. Kind of off the mark probably attributable to the organic nature of the brew.

Bottle (2016 batch). Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), with a hint of diacetyl. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. I wanted to like this more, as itís nicely balanced and quaffable for a DIPA, but the aroma just doesnít do much. I like that the hops are more herbal-spicy-flowery than typical American west coast beers, but itís just too restrained to be exciting and there seems to be a touch of diacetyl lurking in there as well. Drinkable but it just doesnít rise to the next level.

Pours gold with a large white head. Nose shows sweet malt, piny and resinous hops, peach and apricot. Similar flavours with a big clean malt presence, massive piny and spicy hops along with softer fruit hops.

Straw orange and yellow color. Nice bright white head. Lots of spotty lacing. Nose is lots of candied pine and citrus, good malt backbone. Touches of lime jello. Taste is sweet and herbal bitterness. Kind of works and kind of does not. Harsh bitterness in the end. Very sweet in the mouth. Good amount of oil though.

Pour on tap, hazy orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of herbal, grass hops into a bit of caramel, toffee, some sweet citrusy notes into a bit of jammy notes, some slight grass. Taste is a mix of caramel, some earth, orange, hints of citrus into a bit of jam, grass, finishing fairly sweet, slightly bitter.

This beer is a light gold color. Orange peel comes through in the aroma very strongly. It hits your tongue with a fleeting moment of sweetness and fill out to a bold hop bitterness. It lingers and through the progression of flavor I get a somewhat smokey flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

from notes: not sure on the age, probably middling. A little muddled IMHO, but not bad. Malt and pungent and bitter hops play together well. Big sticky body, but - not a standout in the aroma or flavor department. Just ok, and probably a one timer."

Bottle. Pours a hazy light amber color with a ginormous white head on there. Nose is light and grassy, but not overwhelmingly complex for me. Taste is moderately bitter, but nothing special. Wouldnít grab this again.
