DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Sep 13, 2009 22 oz. bottle. Deep ruby/brown that clearly lets light through, produces a large, light yellowish tan head. Lots of caramel in the aroma with lesser contributions of chocolate and some burned sugar. Smooth, medium body, gently carbonated, a little thin on the palate for the style, some light astringency. Flavor echoes the aroma with substantial caramel sweetness up front. Some peppery bite comes through at the finish, but is not at all assertive. This beer was pleasant enough, but didn’t have the oomph behind it that I expect from an impy stout. coyotehunter (542), , Michigan, USA Aug 23, 2009 Bottle thanks to TURDFERGUSON. Pours jet black with a creamy light tan head. Smells nicely of milk chocolate and maybe a splash of coffee. Interesting flavors of molasses, brown sugar, milk chocolate, and damn little coffee....maybe some dirt. Very smooth palate edging on creamy. A bit syrupy, but not much alcohol noticed here. Pretty decent, better than I anticipated. MrBunn (1523), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2009 Bottle with thanks to coyotehunter. Body is a somewhat thin dark brown with little head. Aromas are a decent mix of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Flavor is OK, but kind of thin... a lot of chocolate and scorched malt with a little bit of peat. m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Aug 18, 2009 Pours with a dark brown hue, that sits below a light brown head that is nice and fluffy, but is mostly diminishing. Aroma has roast, coffee, chocolate, and molasses in it.
Flavor is excellent. I am not a big fan of stouts but this one agreed well with me. Coffee in the beginning, with some sweetness and roastiness in the middle, followed by a bitter chocolate ending - hersheys dark chocolate.
Syrupy texture with light carbonation. BMan1113VR (2758), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Aug 17, 2009 Bottle. Pours with a fluffy brown head over a, for all intensive purposes, black body. Decent lacing and some alcohol waves (but not legs). Aroma is roasty, coffee, leather, baked bread (sour dough), espresso, alcohol, and what seems like the lactose similar to the the note found in Guinness. Taste is coffee and chocolate with a lot of deeper, earthier coffee and leather notes dominating the finish. A bit of lactic notes, but very minimal. Some nice alcohol and anise flavors up front with the long, nutty-earthy roast finishing. A bit of smoke. Not bad. Creamy to lively bubbles, alcoholic finish. A touch thin though. buzzoven (333), Japan Aug 6, 2009 Interesting/strange smell of wheat, chocolate, and vitamins (?!) Body is medium and taste centers around a weird hybrid of roast coffee and grapes. Not sure what to think of this one ~ has some interesting personality traits but suffers from some balance issues. tripelthreat (75), Soquel, California, USA Aug 6, 2009 Bottle. Dark brown body topped by a big light brown head. Aroma is light roast, coffee, honey sweetness, and dark fruit. Flavor is lots of milk and dark chocolate, caramel, nuts, coffee and some bitterness. Body is a a little thin and finish is pretty sweet. Easy to drink and good for dessert but a kind of lacking for a big imperial stout. craftbeerdesign (735), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Aug 3, 2009 shared bomber with TheBeerSommelier - thanks! big roasted malts, sweet licorice, and a touch of coffee on the nose... nice big body full of dark fruit, slight caramel notes, deep chocolate and a touch of coffee...
