Eel River Ravens Eye Imperial Stout

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, a ton of alcohol and a little bit oak. Medium-bodied; Strong coffee and roasted malt flavours with a bunch of oak, vanilla, some toffee and a touch of nuts. Aftertaste shows chocolate and graham crackers with a woodsy flavour and a bit of roasted malt - nice, but not horribly strong for the style! Overall, a good beer, but not as good as I expected. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Half Time in Poughkeepsie, New York on 11-June-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 25-July-2009.

Pours dark brown with a stubborn tan head. Smells of chocolate, caramel, molasses, honey. Tastes chocolatey and roasty with a nice spicy compliment on the finish.

Dark brown/black, small quickly fading head. Aroma is roasty and lightly sweet, alcohol. Tastes mostly of roasted malts, light coffee tones, and a strong alcohol prescence with a light burn at the finish. Body is heavy enough to deal with the strong presence of alcohol. Pretty good beer, and it’s organic for extra hipster points.

Dark pour, no head or lace. Dry woody aroma. Thick alcohol dominates with a nutty tangy bitterness. Very sweet with chocolate and caramel notes. Tasty!

Very dark, cola looking and near black beer with a thin orange brown head. The aroma is sweet with some milk chocolate and prune. There is also some fresh cut wood. The taste has initially sweet milk chocolate and anise notes. In the finish, I got some light roasted coffee and lingering cocoa. The anise gets stronger the more you drink. Decent, but I would like a little more sweetness to balance the black licorice character, which quickly gets cloying.

Pours dark black with a short lived beige head. Smell is licorice, and chocolate. Taste is the same with licorice, chocolate and is lightly bitter. Medium to full body with light to medium carbonation. Solid, licorice heavy imperial stout overall.

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, caramel, and moderate fruity notes. It pours a dark brown with some red highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with chocolate and caramel up front. There is some moderate fruitiness in the middle. The finish has some light roasted malt and minimal coffee. Medium-full bodied with a soft mouthfeel.

Pours black from bomber, forming nice size light brown head of foam. Aroma has notes of coffee, chocolate, raisin, apple, slight smoke, and a hint of earthy woodiness. Flavour was dominated by roasted malt, char, and espresso along with some dark chocolate in the finish. Overall the taste is slightly sweeter than expected, but very good overall. A tastey, well made impy stout beer.
