santoslhalper (160), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 26, 2008 Pours a dark mahogany with a thin tan head that disappears quickly. The smell is strong with chocolate, roasty, and coffee aromas, but it smells overly burnt with a strong soy sauce background, which comes out more as it breathes. The taste is much better than the smell. Strong coffee and espresso flavors, with a silky smooth body. Very roasty and burnt, the focus obviously being the malts. This is a pretty decent Imperial Stout that’s kinda interesting to drink. Most RIS you have are hopped to hell - this one is barely even bitter. While it somewhat fails in it’s delivery, the focus on the roasted malts makes this a joy to drink, but not more than one.
travita (631), Lewisville, Texas, USA Jul 1, 2008 Prunes right away in the smell. Look is midnight black with a decent tan head. Also roastiness and coffee are in the smell. Taste is dark fruits, roasty, coffee, pudding. Nice creamy feel. jbuzz (385), South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jun 30, 2008 Organic Beer Tasting at Three Cellars Milwaukee.
Very Smooth and mild. Chocolate character without being to sweet PilsnerPeter (1303), Flushing, New York, USA Jun 20, 2008 Bottle: Pours a deep brown with ruby in the light (good amount of light gets through for am Imperial Stout) Has a creamy tan head. The aroma is fudgey, with good chocolate character and some coffee grinds in the background. Fluffy body. Fudgey taste with dense chocolate flavors. Milky chocolate character without being sweet. Roasted flavors with chocolate cookie dough and a mocha character. No evidence of alcohol, and it’s easy to put away a bomber. Straight forward, somewhat simple Stout, but tasty. GAManiac (173), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 15, 2008 Pours black with hints of ruby around the edges. The head is thin and bubbly and recedes quickly to a minimal swirl on top with a little lacing.
Smell is very sweet for an RIS - big on sweet roasted malts with dark chocolate and dark fruits very evident as well. Maybe a hint of smoked wood in the nose as well.
Taste is also very sweet and dominated by the sweetness of dark fruits, vanilla, and roasted malts up front. There is a bit of dark chocolate and coffee as well and a faint hint of hops in the finish, but not much.
Mouthfeel is sticky sweet and very creamy with decent carbonation.
This isn’t the most complex of RIS’s but it’s very drinkable if you’re OK with sweeter stouts. Enjoyable and recommended. fishingnet (696), Brandon, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a one finger tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium full mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.
