COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditionally, Old Ales are an English style of dark, rich and sweet ale, typically with flavors of soft currant fruit and blackstrap molasses. While Old Ales typically have IBUs (bitterness) of 30-65, Eel River Brewing put their own spin on the style by adding extra hops to ramp up the IBUs to 80!

Poured amber with a thick head. Fruity nose. Smooth entry with a soft , mildly carbonated palate followed by a caramel, maple syrup, and hoppy finish. The strength of this beer hit me fast but the alcohol presence is subtle.

MMXIII aged about 6 months. Had this when it first came out, very malt forward with subtle caramel notes. Now it has mellowed a bit. Not as sweet, hops coming forward a bit and mixing with heavier caramel finish. Much more complex but balanced out a bit.

Good. Rich malt flavor. Sweet, but not overly so. Brownish red pour. Maybe a hint of booziness. Dark fruits. Closest comparison would be a quad without the Belgian yeast.

hotstuff (3954) - Indiana, USA - MAR 17, 2014
Rated on 8-10-2010. This bottled beer pours a medium sized very fizzy ivory head that mostly diminishes, orange, golden body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aromas consist of caramel malt, citrus, earthy hops, sweet, and fruity. This beer tastes sweet, spicy, malty. citrus hops, and fruity. The palate is oily and sticky. This beer is light-medium bodied. The hops are upfront in the flavor, but not over done. This is a sipping beer at 9.7%ABV, worth trying and a beer I would drink again.

Landmonger (153) - USA - MAR 5, 2014
Poured from a bomber dark in color with a nice white head, the aroma is malt sweetness, the taste is malt again with a candied fruit, the carbonation is nice and smooth, the back is the weak point with a residual taste I canít place but not one I like. otherwise excellent

First impression was of sulfur and molasses. But there was something in the nose that I couldnít put my finger on. Orange blossom. Went back with that in mind and the beer opened up! Nose of Rose Hips, generally floral, orange blossom. Honey sweetness that slowly melts on the tongue and morphs in to a biscuity white bread. One of the most complex beers Iíve ever tasted!

Pours a deep rust color with a light yellowish tan head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, plums, candied citrus peel, raisin, and some berry. Taste is toffee, roast (almost smoky), hint of vanilla and nuts, some dried fruit but not as much as in the aroma. Medium bitterness, med-full palate.

From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a clear amber with an ecru head. Boozy caramel nose. Flavors of dark fruits with some sweet floral/herbal notes. Sweet and bitter finish.

Bomber. Pours a murky, deep caramel brown with a big and fluffy off-white head, nice retention and lacing. Nose is malty, orange candy (like Dum Dum suckers), brown sugar, dates. Mouth is big and sticky, malt forward, toffee, vanilla, dried fruit, orange candy again, some slight citrus hoppiness kinda underpinning it all, some booziness on the back end. Tasty stuff, and the first beer Iíve had from these guys.

Bottle. Hazy, medium-brown pour with a light, frothy head. Sweet taste, with citrus notes and a light hop character. A nice mouthfeel and very well balanced.

Thought this would be a trippel. It has a dark pour, tons of caramel and dark fruits. Not terrible.
