santoslhalper (327), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 27, 2008 Deep ruby red with a strong beige head. Smells very sweet, with caramel, cardboard, spice, alcohol, bread, honey, cinnamon, bittersweet, and dark fruit notes. Very rich flavor, with tons of sweetness. Caramel, brown sugar, molasses, orange peel, bourbon, and spicy notes. The alcohol is strong but balanced out nicely. Full and creamy mouthfeel. A damn good, damn potent brew. I think of this as a real Old Ale, not a Barleywine wearing a malty mask.
thornecb (1574), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Jun 19, 2009 Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head recedes to hug rim. Dark caramel and grapefruit aromas. Thin and well-balanced with upfront dark caramel and a lasting sweet resin finish. lumpsowers (235), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Jun 15, 2009 Dark copper pour, big head, serious lacing. Hoppy bitter nose. Thick, heavy roasted toffee or caramel. Fizzy, with a bitter alcoholic finish. Little bit of raisin in there too. Dry, and quite tasty.
maniac (2523), Richmond, Virginia, USA May 27, 2009 On tap at Town Hall on 05/26/2009. Clear copper amber body with a small creamy off-white head. Big floral, citrus and piney hop aroma on a caramel background. Big piney and citrus hop flavor on a caramel background. Medium full body with moderate carbonation and an almost creamy finish.
heemer77 (4187), Savannah, Missouri, USA May 26, 2009 Cloudy brown copper body with a medium khaki head. The nose was sweet caramel candy with some hints of apples and cherries. There was also some doughy goodness behind the candy and fruit, like a nicely blended fruit cake. The taste was leathery and salty with a little bit of ginger spice in the finish. There is also some prune that lingers in the finish. A big brew that still drinks fairly easy. Decent. Juelze (865), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 15, 2009 Pours a deep brownish red color with thin off white head. Aroma is of rich caramel malt, light hops, notes of dark fruit, brown sugar and mild grain. Taste is of caramel, dark fruit, alcohol, and brown sugar. Palate is a bit abrasive or the alcohol, but that aside it’s a solid beer. Boutip (2166), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada May 9, 2009 Bottle: Poured a murky brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma of dry fruit with some nice sweet malt. Taste is also dominated by sweet barley malt with nice notes of dry fruit, some sugar and some lightly fruity ester. Body is quite full with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done with enough complexities but also keeping a nice drinkable profile. Beerme (20), Seattle, Washington, USA May 8, 2009 Pours a dark ruby color witha solid tan head. Aroma of sweet malts. Sweet malty taste with notes of honey, alcohol is well hidden. Nice mellow flavor for such a big beer. Lothore (275), California, USA May 2, 2009 A- Pours a nice deep, murky brownish hue with a 1.5 finger, beige head which sticks around for quite a while.
S- Smells just like an old ale should ... deep caramel and candied fruit notes, very sweet with hints of alcohol.
T-Taste is a little bit of a let down from the smell. Roasted malt with lingering caramel, dark fruitiness and a hop kick finishing out the taste. A little too roasty for my taste and the caramel and dark fruit could have been more well pronounced.
M- At first I thought it was a tad thin but there was definitely a thick resiny quality to it that coats the mouth and sticks around for a while.
D- All in all an excellent old ale. The smell wrote a check that the taste couldn’t cash but it still ended up being a bit better than average.
