3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Though I’m certainly a fan of viscous, candy sugar ’n’ caramel old ales, this one’s particular impressive because it doesn’t really fit that description; it seems to have a healthy dose of bittering hops, which balances the palate and allows the caramel-wood-smoke-loam-fig notes to shine through in a way that the more saccharine old ales don’t. Highly recommended.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a hazy golden burnt orange to caramel brown color with a thin layer of a white head. Once the head died down, there was some light stringy lacing here and there.
The smell had some light burnt raisins along with some caramel malts. There’s a light brown sugar trying to make an effort to flow forth but it mainly stays subdued.
The taste was mainly sweet but had an element of sour sweet candy which was the same aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body with a tad of sessionability about it. The carbonation was subdued but still good for its style.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good old ale.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep chestnut, with a large light beige head, which lasts very well and leaves excellent lacing. There is plenty of plum and raisin old ale character in the aroma, but balanced by a more savoury, nutty note and strong herbal hops. Bitter herbal and pine hops up front give way to treacle and plum in the mid-palate. Nutty, meaty notes come into a savoury finish. This is a very unusual old ale, much more savoury and with way more hops character than I would expect. It is still highly enjoyable, but definitely a little odd.

Now that is what you want to taste and feel after having an English Old-Style Ale. Perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark brown with a large lasting head.
Nose shows golden syrup, booze, fruitcake, figs, brown sugar and cognac. Lovely.
Similarly rich flavours. More booze though, a little hot. Loads of golden syrup, bordering on a bit too sweet.
Lovely creamy carbonation and rich body.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rich dark red almost brown in color this beer has an aroma of fruit and cookie dough or freshly baked cookies. A sweet flavor leads you in to a rich hop bite which then mellows out again and finishes with that same sweetness that it led with. One if my all time favorite brews for sure.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Barrels & Bottles a few nights ago. Light brown and clear appearance with an off-white head. Malty aroma, with light hops, brown sugar, chocolate, caramel and toffee. Similar flavor, dark malts, rich, medium sweetness, mild bitterness and dark fruits. Medium to full body. Pretty good, I’d like to try a bottle or full pour of this sometime.

4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
MMXIII aged about 6 months. Had this when it first came out, very malt forward with subtle caramel notes. Now it has mellowed a bit. Not as sweet, hops coming forward a bit and mixing with heavier caramel finish. Much more complex but balanced out a bit.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Good. Rich malt flavor. Sweet, but not overly so. Brownish red pour. Maybe a hint of booziness. Dark fruits. Closest comparison would be a quad without the Belgian yeast.
