Traditionally, Old Ales are an English style of dark, rich and sweet ale, typically with flavors of soft currant fruit and blackstrap molasses. While Old Ales typically have IBUs (bitterness) of 30-65, Eel River Brewing put their own spin on the style by adding extra hops to ramp up the IBUs to 80!

On tap at Papago Brewing in Phoenix. This was absolutely delicious. Notes of vanilla and pear over a great, intense, wonderfully sharp classic American strong ale taste. Caramel malt holds it all together. A perfect balance. Highly recommended.

Bottled. Pours deep orangy with an average off-white head. Aroma of bread, herbal, spicy notes and caramel. Sweet flavor that ends up dry and with bitter notes. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. A nice Ale indeed. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hazy ruby/amber with a thin off white head. Plummy and fruity nose with belgian dark ale tones and a little cherry and belgian sugar and English old ale sweetness. Tasty flavor with just a hint more carbonation than it needs, with loads of date/plum/raisin, a hint of cherry, belgian dark candy sugar, English dark malt, belgian dark malt, and a slightly boozy raisiny finish. Nice.

Poured into an English pint glass. Dark cola brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is quite bready with some molasses and dark fruit. Flavor is sweet and malty with a nice earthy character, some dark fruit notes, and a mildly bitter finish with earthy hops. Medium to full bodied with some stickiness and a long finish. Overall a nice old ale that is accentuated by some increased hop usage.

Once again, I could select adjective that are imperfect for describing this tasty brew were the hour not so late and the bottle not so empty.

Bottle. Dark amber colour with a small diminishing head. The aroma has notes of caramel, light hops, a nutty side. The flavour is sweet with a good caramel flavour, not a strong finish. Good without being exciting.

>> Clearish deep amber to red pour. Weaker head, yellow bubbles. Nose is maple, brown sugar, citrus hops. Taste is hoppy, spicy, brown sugar, paper, spicy hops. Slight astringency and paper. Harsher palate. Feels more like an old DIPA.
