| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 28, 2009 Nice full brown-sugar aroma. Pours like an old ale, but the taste remains thin and relatively un-nuanced. Good beer, just not worth the tag. Go Old Stock Ale. As usual. Glouglouburp (2894), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 23, 2009 In short: A strong sweet sipper with a bit of everything. Not bad all.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed about 6 months after purchase
The look: Cloudy dark amber body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is alcohol fumes, wood and burnt plastic. Body is pleasantly full with a lively Belgian style carbonation. Taste has quite a bit of dried of dried fruits, a full box of match sticks, cherry tree, brown sugar, oxidation sensation, honey, a bit of caramel, toasted bread. Good amount of grassy and floral hops. Overall the beer feels very sweet. I usually don’t care for that type of very sugary sweet beer but somehow this one a an acceptable sipper. Good, not great, Eel River Simple Joy. 17thfloor (1519), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 15, 2009 Updated: Dec 16, 200922oz bottle. Pours a thinner but fairly murky reddish caramel color with a thinner but sticky cream colored very fizzy head. Aroma of a oxidized American barely wine, piney hoppy, cotton candy, nutty, very barleywine-ish.
Flavor follows exactly, strong hopped nutty English barleywine, very nutty, cherries, lots of aged piney hops, similar to Big Foot, cotton candy, American barleywine with nutty and cherry English malt character. Medium bodied, powdery chalky feeling, softer fizzy carbonation. Pretty good. KyotoLefty (1510), Kyoto, Japan

Malty, caramel aroma with alcoholic fumes and spices. Malty flavor with alcohol burn and hops and a bit of fruit. Sweet, but not overly so. Good.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 5, 2009 Bought at local off sale. Surprised at how good this was. Nice balance of sweet malt and nuts, a hint of sour and bitter, even some carmel and exotic fruit. Worth another try. madmitch76 (659), , Essex, England

Odd one this... sweet chocolate malt and a little coca cola in the middle (breifly) and then a bitterish juicy grapefruit finish. The contrast between the sweet chocolate and the bitter grapefruit is pronounced. Don’t drink this too cold or it just tastes like a salty barleywine! glennmastrange (869), hobe sound, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 15, 2009 Bottle. Heavy dark roasted and cereal malt aromas right up front, with light floral and citrus hops, leather for the yeast with dried cherry and brown sugar in the background. Head is small, frothy, faintly off-white with spotty lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is a deep reddish brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, a touch oily with a lively carbonation. Well balanced and nice complexity makes this a pretty good Old Ale.
