Monopoly beer of Turkey. Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol, and Turkey is 99% Muslim... and so what do you expect from their national beer? Not much, and that’s what you get. I stayed with some New Zealander friends in Istanbul, who were starting a stay of 6 months in the city, as I prepared to embark on a 2 month cycle tour of the country. We all loved beer drinking and went out and had a few. I came back at the end of the tour and they had sworn off beer, thanks to Efes and were drinking cocktails. As for me, I was still into beer, as long as it wasn’t Efes! Poor national monopoly beer that could be easily killed by competition, if there was any.

Pours bright yellow with small head. Smells a bit skunky, some alcohol, some hay. Seemingly not too much malt in this pilsener. A bit overcarbonated.

Bottle, at Istanbulu in Teale Square, MA, 2013
Foamy white head, fizzles away to cover/ring rather quickly, topping a pale gold body that is clear and well-carbonated.
Actual hops in the nose, lightly spicy, a touch floral and minty-like, but also a bit of oxidation (cardboard) and some metallic notes. Little bit of seltzer-like saltiness and then a hint of malt (honey). Not bad at all, certainly less offensive than many of the style, with no DMS or vegetal flavors. That you can smell actual hops is always a pleasant surprise.
Very very carbonated, leading to a light body, with some notes of vanilla/honey-like maltiness, very sparse and well-attenuated. Bit of bitterness on the finish and a bit of oxidation, but no gross flaws here (just some acetyldehyde). Quite drinkable, especially in part to the carbonation and grassiness from the hops.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. The beer had a very light, super clear gold color with rising bubbles and a large, foamy, white head with decent retention, lighter cling and lacing. Its aroma had a strong malt and barley adjunct scent with bits of straw, corn, and yeast. The taste was a deep bitter grainy-corny blend with a sour mash component, which was pretty bad. It was a lighter, thinner beer with a fairly lively mouthfeel and a dry, thin finish. My first beer from Turkey, not a good one.
