A typical Austrian Märzenbier, mildly hoppy, highly fermented and full-bodied in taste. With 5.2% alcohol by volume and original gravity of 11.8ºPlato, it is a highly drinkable, well-rounded beer with a pronounced malt flavour. Award winner at national and international beer competitions, Gold Medal winner and holder of Monde Selection International High Quality Trophy. “Märzen” is derived from the German word for the month of March, März. Traditionally, beer was brewed in the autumn, and the barrels of beer would be covered with ice during the cold winter months. By the time the ice melted in March, the beer would be ready to drink.

Pale golden colour, clear, small thin head which didn’t hang around long, tiny amount of lacing retained. Aroma was malty, strong hints of cabbage and vanilla, points to Saaz. Tasted bready, notes of sweet apple as well as malt, hint of vanilla. Soon went flat, texture was quite thick, fairly smooth. Overall, drinkable but too thick to be a Helles and slightly lacing depth to be a Maerzen.

0,5 l can. Another austrian beer from Kristall-König. Thanks a lot! Clear golden in the glass, with a more than one finger head off white head, fast fading. Maybe grassy on the nose, but if, not a lot. Taste? Wait ... some citrus, watery. Like a watery corn beer. Bad one.

Rating #1405 - 25.12.2014 - 500mL Can #18 in the 2014 BeerAdvent Calendar (Costco). Clear golden pour with a bubbly white head. Aroma has a hint of malty sweetness, and a strong hoppy aroma. Medium carbonation. Bubbly, dry mouthfeel, medium-bodied. Light bitterness in the finish, quite smooth. Expected fuller body and a little darker colour in a Marzen, but this is passable.

500ml can pours a clear light golden color with a finger of white head that leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is grassy and grainy. Taste is a grassy hop bitterness with a light malty sweetness. Light bodied with decent carbonation. Grainy mouth feel. A typical brew for the style, nothing special.
