1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle (BB Feb 2014).
Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing.
Body is light amber.
Aroma is lightly malty (grain, nuts), with notes of metal, DMS.
Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter, husky.
Light body, watery texture, lively carbonation, metallic.
Mirrors my experience with the helles vollbier back in May, but even worse this time...very metallic and overall just awful, completely undrinkable although short of repulsive (the metal is the worst part). I hold out hope that the draft samples are completely different, but they were closed on this trip.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle looks simple, a bit like a cheap beer. Beer in the glass zippy, small head. Starts malty, fruity like plum and lemon, quite sourish background. Mild dry notes. Finish still dominated by malty-sourish notes. Not my favourite.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught at Brauerei Eichhorn, Nov. 2012: Bronze with golden highlights. Creamy and persistent cap of clingy meringue. Clean, airy, expressively malty nose teems with melanoidins, hazelnut, browned toffee, nuts, earthy cocoa, and a vibrant "green" hoppiness. Underlying tropical fruitiness. Firm, snug carbonation. Tease of estery fruitiness yields to wonderfully crisp, toffee-kissed Munich and a savory medley of fresh baguette and creamed coffee. Splash of licorice underscores the maltiness with deft restraint. Pronounced bite of yeast and minerals accentuates the seductively juicy malt bill. Hops pack plenty of luster, as well. Exceptionally succulent florals artfully mirror the fat and juicy melanoidins. Chewy, mouth-filing dextrins and a bitter edge of pumpernickel bread saturate the dry, cleanly attenuated finish. A flawless example devoid of the boring cola dullness, etc. An amazingly clean, quaffable, and intricate version.
