(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Copper in color with very mild carbonation and an extremely thin layer of off-white foam. Aroma is mild, surprising for a doppelbock, but rather malty. Some very light spice as well. Flavor is spicy, yeasty, and definitely malty at the start. Some bitter and dry malts come through near the middle, but for the most part you get lots of caramel sweetness. Alcohol is very well hidden and it leaves a lightly bitter taste on the palate.

Tap at Mahaffeys Pub. Pours a medium light woody brown - clear and a nice lasting fluffy white head. Aroma is nutty moderately big toasted malts, some munich and vienna sweetness, toffee and light German hops. Flavor is moderately sweet, light nuts, toast, biscuit, some earth and leather- light on the hops, malt is medium perhaps a touch weak for the style, but overall very clean and drinkable. Nice.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: Served up a clear, deep, dark orangey body, or, at least in the subdued mood lighting of the lower "The Fred" bar at the new Taco Mac location in the Prado. Topped with an inch-high head of beige foam.
Smell: An aroma smelling heavily of sugars which themselves have also been heavily toasted. Fruity notes of golden raisins spritzed with a dash of alcohol.
Taste: My, but it’s sugary sweet! Toasty, bready malts with a slight underlying nuttiness. Moderate dried fruit tastes as one might expect. Spicy, leafy hop presence but no more than a thin, short-lived hint of bitterness. Then, it’s right back to the sweetness and the toastiness until the drying finish that carried a bit of alcoholic heat with it.
Mouthfeel: It just barely slides into medium-bodied. Medium-light carbonation.
Drinkability: A so-so, but oh-so sweet doppelbock, perhaps even a bit too sugary for me and I’m a chap who usually enjoys a sweet brew.
