4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackHaddock (2350) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 26, 2013
Half-litre bottle, poured (twice) into my Westmalle chalice at home on 26 Apr 2013, some three months before its BBD.
Deep, dark, ruby red body: the beige head just wanted to leave before it had settled, a pity.
The aroma was of coffee and dark chocolate infused with red berries and raisins: the taste was a rich blend of those smells. The alcohol is well masked by the flavours within the brew and hints of toffee and caramel can be added to the malty esters of coffee and chocolate already mentioned.
Easy drinking for it’s alcohol level: far too easy!

The head is medium, the body darkbrown. It smells bitter-alcoholic, darkmalty. Taste is mild, malty, darkmalt, bit roasty. A bit boring, not that intensive.

(bottle) Clear, dark brown colour with a beige and dense mid-sized foamy head. Molassy toast-malty and bready aroma with caramel and subtle notes of dried fruits. Moderately sweet flavour for a DB, quite full bodied with a well-matured carbonation. Solid dark malty base with bready notes, caramel and traces of molasses; sweet and mildly toasty bitter finish with hints of dark chocolate and alcohol. Decent Doppelbock. 19.X.12 Earlier Rating: 5/28/2006 Total Score: 3.2 (bottle) Dark brown colour with a firm and mid-sized foamy beige head. Sweet toast-malty nose with molasses, caramel and a subtle fruitiness when it warms. Sweet flavour, medium to full body, smooth carbonation. Toast-malty taste with caramel and hints of coffee; medium sweet malty, slightly bitter finish, the alcohol is present but also well-integrated; quite lasting aftertaste with liquorice. Strong and tasty Doppelbock. Many thanks to EithCubes for this one !
