UPDATED: DEC 19, 2010 500 ml bottle, BB reads 27. June 2011, into tulip. Prior to opening the bottle was held upside down and gently shaked to evenly distribute the yeast into the suspension. Pours cloudy, deep amber body with reddish hue, overlain by moderate, beige head that completely dissipates. According to the brewer the malts that have been used in this one are Munich, Cara and Roasted malt and that is clearly reflected in the aroma profile with rich maltiness, toast-like melanoidins and caramel with a hint of yeasty spiciness. The flavor is predominant malty sweetness with a fair amount of intense toasty overtones, mild roastiness, yeast and some hoppy bitterness towards the finish. Medium to full bodied with delicate carbonation. In short: a full bodied malty, caramellish-toasty brew with a yeasty touch. Update: IMO the current "systematic position" of this beer is erroneous due to the abundance of yeast - instead as Dunkler Bock should be classified as Zwickel: lacking clarity of a bock seems to be unfiltered and the brewer recommends to raise the yeast before pouring it in order to enhance the natural cloudy appearance of the beer, a typical Zwickel characteristic.

(bottle) Almost cloudy, copper colour with a mid-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Moderately sweet and slightly yeasty cara-malty aroma with berry-fruity and bready notes. Sweet flavour with a tinge of bitterness, medium to full bodied with a smooth and well-matured carbonation. Hearty cara-malty body with yeasty and fruity accents, as well as shy woody hoppy notes towards the sweet-bitter finish. Quaffable brew with a (still) typical abv for a Bock from the (former) Soviet-occupied zone. 17.XI.10

Had a little tour through the nice Erzgebirge yesterday to get to Einsiedel and buy 6 bottles of this new beer. Really like the idea for the beer style. Bottle looks wonderful. Beer in the glass copper-coloured, brownish, nice head. Starts not as strong as exspected, malty-spicy, quite yeasty. Some fruity notes of apricot, hints of caramel. Finish mild but not washy with wonderful modest dry hoppy notes, very well balanced. Tastes not really like a bock but like a very taste christmas-festbier. Good!
