American and Bavarian craft come together with the finest Icelandic water to create the Viking version of the Pale Ale, where robust hoppiness meets smooth malty undertones. Cascade hops give it the American character, while Northern Brewer hops add just enough bitterness to make this Ale refreshingly Icelandic.

On tap at Bunk Bar, Reykjavik. Pours clear deep golden with a small white head. Aroma is weak malty caramel, with some shy citrussy hops. Taste is light sweet caramel, easy on the hops, mediocre lager.

On tap at Islenski Barinn, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out light toasted malt and a restrained stale hop character. Flavour is clean, with a dry very light floral hop character balanced by a dry biscuity malt backbone. Pretty boring stuff but competently brewed. Uninspiring.

ON bottle from Vinmonopolet Norway, on order (bu). Deep golden color, good foam. Medium aroma intensity; malt, hops, dried fruits and light caramel. Medium body & complexity. A little on the sweet side, but quite ok balanced with decent bitterness. Enjoyable

Pours almost clear amber with medium white head that reduces to decorative skim. Aroma is basic, malt and yeast, with hints of caramel and woody spice. The taste is similarly low key, dilute toffee, bread and grapefruit rind. End is mildy and somewhat pointlessly bitter, though this smooths out as it approaches room temperature. This nods toward a traditional IPA, less harsh than the current American style without a pronounced profile of its own.
