From the bottle. Black, little head. Aroma a little yeasty at first but clears to a faint chocolate aroma. Very nice coffee and chocolate flavours and a little hoppy bitterness to finish. Iceland not noted for its beer, but just the thing to quaff from a horn in a mead hall before aweekend away in the longboat with some likeminded lads for a bit of a pillage.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 shoulderbroken (1145) - Tokyo, JAPAN - APR 3, 2012
Bottle from Kris Wines. Dark brown with a small gold head. Aroma is smoky, meaty, bit of black treacle, coffee and soy sauce. Taste is pleasantly smoky and spicy with a bit of coffee bitterness. Lots of burnt malt. And again, something slightly savoury. Body is a bit thinner than I would have expected, but this is a pretty interesting and tasty beer.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. There’s something very compelling about the notion of an Icelandic Toasted Porter. And the beer is very tasty. Quite clean and lacking a bit in character, so this is more in the American tradition than European, but acceptable. Smooth and soft with coffee and chocolate notes. Quite predictable, but then most dark beers are.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 justm (164) - Essex, ENGLAND - MAR 22, 2012
Bottle at home. Pours a very dark brown with a rich beige head. Aroma is malty toffee, with raisin and creosote notes. Thin and a little tart on the palate, chocolate and raisin flavours play lighty over the tongue with a slight white coffee creaminess. A roasty malty milk chocolate aftertaste fades lightly and rather tastily away. Very pleasant and ticks all the right boxes for me.

33cl bottle to take away from the Beer House, Charing Cross. Black with brown tinges and a fast settling espresso crema. Treacle and coffee on the nose plus maybe a hint of strawberry. Body is a little thin for a rich porter, but very flavoursome, with roasted coffee and malt, plus a little dry peppery hop bitterness. Slight tartness in the finish along with more roast malt and some burnt caramel.
