3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Wow, I actually found an unrated brew in my stash (garage min-fridge) - lots of ticks in town recently and I must have gotten sidetracked. I’m not sure that a 12 oz longneck could have a better appearance - clean label and graphics, dark beer that you can’t see through, dense tan head. Maybe if the bottle was embossed or had a silver foil neck, but this is close enough to a 5 for appearance. Mellow, nutty sweet malty aroma with faint cane syrup/light molasses. Exceptionally smooth - nice roast, mild coffee - low bittering otherwise. Dry, zero fruit, no toffee or caramel Medium body, roasty/toasted soy nut finish. Quality. ABC Liquors, Bull Run.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a black body with a medium creamy off-white head. Nose is mild notes of licorice, chocolate, coffee and hints of some sour-ish yeasty tones, caramel and grains in the back. Taste is assertive coffee tones, dark chocolate, burnt toast/burnt sugar and hints of grains, yeast and dark malts lingering in the back. Some astringency, bordering on medicinal bitterness, in the aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation. A few flaws but otherwise a relatively OK porter (which seems quite a bit overrated IMO).

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours pitch black with a thin layer of creamy tan head. Coffee/toffee aromas. Flavors of coffee and chocolate with just a hint of smokiness. Makes me want to listen to Bjork and... well, that’s the extent of my Icelandic knowledge.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass
From: World Market in Las Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Aug. 1, 2013
Consumed: Aug. 3, 2013
Poured a brownish almost black color with 2-to-3 fingers of tan frothy tan head. Sporadic, uneven foamy lacing along the sides all the way down. Great retention on the top on the way down.
Smelled dark chocolate, fudge, toffee, caramel, coffee, smoky fire, toast, roasty nuts and tree bark.
Tasted similar to the nose, albeit just a tad bit smokier. Got smoky fire, coffee beans, dark chocolate, toast, ashtray, toast, roasty nuts, fudge, caramel and toffee.
Medium body. Creamy-to-slick texture. Average-to-light carbonation. Long finish.
Just an average porter overall. Nothing too special about it.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co. Almost black colour, not much head. Milky woody malt aroma. Roasted malt flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Not a typical porter but still a decent beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled 20/07/13. A black beer with a disappering off-white head. An interesting and tasty porter. Roasty and chocolatey and with coffee notes. Some sourness and some good hops. A lot going on but it all balances really well. I really liked this.
