3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Brown malt toastiness delivers earthiness and bitterness amongst an otherwise effervescent, bread lovers’ brew.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A healthy head of foam covers the darkness.
-That toast character is unmistakable.
-The softness of the bubbles feels natural (not forced).
-Drinkability remains high (if you like toast, obviously).

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark chocolate brown that lets in just a little daylight at the bottom, and features a fairly thick tan head. Aroma is not strong, but promises with roast malt and coffee tones. Flavor features roast malt, coffee and subtle chocolaty tones. Mouthfeel offers thin body but good fizz. Summon your inner Viking! Not hard for me, what with I’m 1/4 Norse thanks to my dad.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Moderate foaming porter leaves a small but compact and persistent foam. The aroma is weak with slightly toasted malt. The taste is dark chocolate, toasted malt and a little coffee. Carbonation is comfortable and keeps the beer lively. The finish has a little hop and leaves a dry aftertaste. Palate is satisfactory and it is a good average porter who is not intrusive in any way. A little licorice aftertaste.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a medium height tan head. Notes of roasted malts, chocolate, a bit of brewed coffee and licorice. Smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation and a chocolate bitter-sweet aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Icelandic porter with tan coloured, moussy, dense, ’membranous’ lacing head and very dark, hazy burgundy robe, blackish in general appearance. Rather ’animalistic’ aroma of smoked bacon, toasted rye bread, home made caramel, charcoal, strongly reduced beef broth or even gravy, some vague FFF, moist mushrooms, fermenting tree or even tobacco leaves, sharply smelling wet leather, coffee grounds, unsugared chocolate, fried egg, black olive, haemoglobin iron, faint hints of dried thyme, cigarette ashes, earthy cooked potato, dried fig and raw blackcurrant. Restrained onset of deeply meaty umami, biltong- and cured bacon-like sensations, very little to almost no sweetness, ’basic’ sourishness, salty touch of dried seaweed somewhere, softish carbo, mellow and lean mouthfeel, gliding effortlessly over the tongue and consisting of very nutty and indeed very thoroughly toasted malt bitterness evolving into a mouth-filling roasted bitterness with traits of bitter chocolate and cold black coffee (but not so much espresso), gaining a bit more bitterness in the end thanks to peppery, leafy hops, closing all the sweetness down completely - not a difficult task in this case, as there is almost no sweetness to begin with. A spicy bitterness rounds things off and the alcohol remains perfectly hidden, as should be the case for a 6% ABV beer. Dubbed a ’toasted porter’ by its creators but this is in all respects a typical ’smoked porter’, the American craft beer hybrid which began its own life since Alaskan Smoked Porter twenty years ago. In this respect, it is a fulfilling, well-equipped example of this hybrid style, albeit a bit rough on the edges; I am, however, convinced it conceals great ageing potential, as so many smoked beers do. Interesting beer for sure, but most of all: interesting to see how even a relatively ’remote’ community like the Icelanders have picked up the international craft beer revolution now. Enjoyed this - twice, in fact, thanks Jan for sharing last week’s bottle!

Pitch black with a tan head. Nice aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is medium bitter and the body is full and round. Good porter.
