COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At the momment Ekim Brewing produces only one style of beer. This beer is a USA style India Pale Ale,we call it our Viking Ipa.It is a generously hopped malty beer. It’s abv or alchohol content ranges from 5.5 to 6.3% .We are still deciding on just how strong the beer should be. It’s ibu”s or bitterness around the 50 ibu mark approximatly. Our beer is both unfiltered and unpasturised. We also use only natural ingredients: malt, hops, yeast and water.

tap at the local taphouse. glowing gold-red with resinous hoppy head. smell has nice mix of green and pink - pine and grass cut through at the 10kHz level along with muted 1000Hz tropical fruit and orange. sweet and slick in the mouth with orange flaring up before a mixture of brown bread malt 100Hz and just enough spike in the tail. a very nice ipa with good balance of resin, bitterness, melanoidin and maillard. not super aggressive but very flavoursome and clean.

Bottle thanks to Owen. Pours amber with a small white head. Nose is huge mango hops. Massively tropical with a nice undertone of heavy malts. Taste showcases floral and tropical hops perfectly. Mass mango undertone with soft caramel behind it all. Heavy malts help balance it and it doesn’t have much bitterness at all. Very well crafted beer

330ml bottle, at 5.8% abv. Pours a clear reddish amber, with a small off-white head, poor retention but good lacing. The aroma is fresh, with lots of pine and some sweeter herbal notes. Hops are quite mild initially, but they build into a crescendo of slightly oily, tangy pine and pepper. A touch of smooth, toasty malt comes in, with a delightful resurgence of the hops to finish, and a balanced, malty aftertaste. A nice IPA indeed, which bodes well for the future of this tiny local brewery. I do think, however, that finalising the IPA before releasing the beer might have been a sensible plan. Nonetheless, I look forward to trying more of their products into the future.

highlandlad (1329) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - JAN 14, 2011
A fat, malty IPA in the Australian style. Well above average by local standards but a bit flabby around the middle, imo. I’d love to see an Australian brewer produce a lean, sleek North American hop bomb. Local brewers seem to feel any above-average bitterness needs to be balanced by a heavy malt bill. The 6.3% abv version was highly sessionable at 50 ibus. This could become a regular in my fridge if they can keep it consistent. (330ml bottle from Leura Cellars. 6.3% abv)

Bottle. Pours a medium copper with a decent offwhite head. Some grassy hop aromas and plenty of light caramel. Flavours are dominated by the malt with plenty of sweet caramel and a little dark fruit. Some resiny hop bitterness on the finish but the malt is definately dominant. Fullish mouthfeel. Not too bad and effort.

650ml bottle at 5.9%, bottled on 26/8/10. pours a dark copper with a thick light brown head that settles quickly. quite malty in both aroma and taste, sweet with some sticky hops bringing out a bitterness at the finish. decent, but definately not a west coast style ipa

650ml bottle, pours a dark amber coppery colour with a medium sized offwhite/creamy colour head. it has your usual hoppy ipa aroma and taste but i perfer a more hoppier ipa than this one has but it’s a very enjoyable brew

330ml bottle. Rocky dense and deep foam cap that sits avove a dark, almost copper body. Aroma of hops with some spiced raisins coming through and strong complex flavours that hit all the right spots. One of those rare finds that you expect little from but deliver plenty.

330ml bottle 3/3/10 Amber with red hints, offwhite foam is quite persistant. Reasonably rich aroma; toffee malts, leafy hops, some dark fruit esters that remind me more of a Belgian ale that IPA, but hey, it works. Subdued carbonation leaves the body quite thick with a somewhat creamy texture. Dark fruit esters(i’m assuming) take front seat with notes of plum and cherry, tobacco leaf hop earthiness in with works with sweet toffee, bready malts makes for quite a sweet beer overall. Bitterness pops up late palate, obvious but doesn’t provide a great deal of balance. Not a bad beer but it doesn’t scream IPA to me, particularly not American style certainly, British at best. Needs more hops and a more neutral yeast character.
