3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Thorpe429 (3542) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 23, 2011
Bottle picked up at Total Wine in Alexandria. Served in a Hill Farmstead wine glass.
Pours a bright red-copper that is nearly transparent. Quite light and clear for a doppelbock. There is a thin off-white head to begin, though that quickly disappears and doesn’t leave anything behind other than a few thin legs.
Smell first pushes through some notes of sherry along with some dark fruits, cherry, and molasses. Brown sugar there as well. Lightly sweet and a bit boozy. Very complex. Flavor isn’t quite as well integrated, hitting more of the sweet brown sugar notes and less of the sherry. There’s also quite a bit more booze than there was in the nose. Feel is medium with low carbonation and a bit of alcohol. Quite good overall. Very different than the typical doppelbock, though something that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Bottle. Malts, malts malts. Aroma, sweet mild malts. Flavor, sweet mild malts. Alcohol hidden quite well, especially for 11%. Touch of caramel notes, that’s about it. Inoffensive, highly drinkable for what it is, but nothing else really pops out of this one.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 RyanMM (410) - Ferndale, Michigan, USA - MAR 22, 2011
Pours brilliant copper with a nearly-to-the-top-of-my-tulip head. Recedes rather fast though. Aroma is sticky sweet fruit, grapey, some citrus. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Quite sweet up front, a bit bready with those ripe fruit notes in the middle, with some resiny, earthy hops on the finish. Alcohol warming from the 11% is present and the finish has some heat, about on par with the ABV. Pretty decent stuff. Definitely unique enough to warrant the occasional quaff when something different is called for.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 ludhaber (14) - Massachusetts, USA - MAR 20, 2011
Smoth buttery beer with a malty finish. The hops is light and could be better balanced but for an 11% beer this finishes smooth and easy very easy to drink.
