3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 larsga (4421) - Oslo, NORWAY - SEP 7, 2005
UPDATED: MAY 24, 2010 Largish finely laced head. Amber, whisky-like colour. Aroma is dense caramelly malts with notes of dried fruit and straw, with some alcohol. Powerful malty caramelly strawberry taste with alcohol and straw notes. Clean and harmonic, with considerable alcohol heat. Dry straw and caramel aftertaste. Smooth and quite balanced. Full-bodied. Very good for such a strong beer. (0.33l bottle at Hagleite, Kulmbach, originally. Rerated from 0.1l taster from bottle at EBF ’08.)
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Rastacouere (5900) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 6, 2005
Bottle at d.b.a. Samichlaus like very hazelnutty, intensely liquorous and sweet, bready nose. It pours reddish, clear and with neglectable head. Bockish fruitiness gathers banana, apricot, pineapple and cherry hints. Its best moments are met when peppery flavours kick in with the fruits, but swiftly enough, the overwhelming sweetness has the best of it. Bloody, cheap port-like, medicinal and bubble gummy in mouth, this is almost impossible to drink for me, no bitterness at all, just challenging thick, surprisingly carbonated worty malts.Very challenging to finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 BBB63 (4939) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - AUG 30, 2005
Wow, what an oversite...I have not rated the first beer I legally drank, well time to fix this, served in my Expedition Snifter:
Takes on a rich amber cider hue with a fading head and little lace, oily film does appear and coat the glassware. The aroma has notes of granny smith apples, overripened fig, heavy caramel and crystal malt, butterscotch (but in a good way) and twinge of alcohol vapors. The taste starts with a massive dose of sweetness, malty and sugary. Supported by rich fruits and some pepper upon the finish. There is a hint of bitterness but it is far to subdued to do much good. I don’t think it is a sweet has other raters but still a bit over the top. The feel is warming for sure and does display a medical dryness after awhile. Good brew but not something i wish to have very often, which is better than the shocking first impression I had those twenty three years ago.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 SledgeJr (3579) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - AUG 22, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 1, 2006 In the bottle at Huber Haus. Pours amber with a quickly diminishing head. Has a peculiar apple aroma, if you can get past the alcohol burn. Crystal clear in its transluscence. Sweet and syrupy without any hop balance. Sorry, but just about any American Barleywine can kick its ass. Someday, maybe, the Germans will discover the hop when they play with the high gravity stuff.
UPDATE 6/25/6: On tap at the Huber Haus. Amber beer with a thick rich cascading head. A very chewey beer vom foss, but I find it to still be out of balance with the strong alcohol not masked by malt or hops sufficiently.
