COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2005 2003 bottle. Wow what an aroma. Aroma very strong and permeating. Lots of bittersweet fruit, tart tart cherries, some prunes and dark dark concord grapes. Good thick dry molasses sweet aroma on the backend to balance it. Pours with relatively little off white head, clear but very wavy and glucose-like, as is typical of the style. Bright orange to a soft hazy peach. Copper colors in there as well. Unlike the kulmbacher eis in color and no dark, rich fruit and roast, but every bit as much flavor. Different but quite elegant, lots of lighter fruit, very sweet, but I will agree, it somehow isnt cloying, good bitterness, maybe a touch of acidity/alcohol but nowhere near what I would expect from from 11 abv. Flavors of sweet yellow grapes, golden delicious apples, syrupy in a good way, very viscous. Some light sweet citrus tones, like sweet orange curacao. Full body. Not actually concentrated by the ice and removal process?

Bottle courtesy mlunger12! Clear amber pour with a small ring of khaki head. Very sweet malty aroma with a hint of cardboard and dark fruits. Sweet malty flavor with a hint of metal. Nothing great here.

Bottle thanks to my brother. Amber with no head. Nose is fruity with notes of sherry and raisins. Thick like syrup and the sherry flavor really shines with a very smooth balance between the malts.

Bottle picked up at Total Wine in Alexandria. Served in a Hill Farmstead wine glass. Pours a bright red-copper that is nearly transparent. Quite light and clear for a doppelbock. There is a thin off-white head to begin, though that quickly disappears and doesn’t leave anything behind other than a few thin legs. Smell first pushes through some notes of sherry along with some dark fruits, cherry, and molasses. Brown sugar there as well. Lightly sweet and a bit boozy. Very complex. Flavor isn’t quite as well integrated, hitting more of the sweet brown sugar notes and less of the sherry. There’s also quite a bit more booze than there was in the nose. Feel is medium with low carbonation and a bit of alcohol. Quite good overall. Very different than the typical doppelbock, though something that I thoroughly enjoyed. Bottled@EBF 2008. Brilliant deep amber color, virtually no head. The aroma has a soft, delicate sweet and nutty malt profile, lots of ripe fruits and a noticeable, but inoffensive alcohol scent. Taste is vinous, gently sweet, full malty with a plummy fruitiness. Notes of mild bittering hops, molasses and port. Chewy mouthfeel. Full-bodied. A pleasant alcohol heat in the finish. Powerful and balanced. A treat.

The initial aroma and flavour of this excessively strong brew is completely dominated by a revolting sweetness, later you find pleasant notes like oak and dried fruit - however much of the sweetness prevails even to the aftertaste, making it almost impossible to finish a bottle. This was my first eisbock, I feel no urge to sample the style again (unless it’s for free). I don’t need a beer to ’stand in for fine sherry or port’ - given the choice, I’d rather have just that: A fine sherry or port! Call me a conservative dumb-ass if you like, but I still think a beer primarily should taste like beer.

Bottle thanks to footbalm. Pours a clear and dark amber with a thin white head. The aroma is very nice; tons of fruit, alcohol, rich malt and syrup. The taste is very smooth and nice; a rich fruit aspect, sweet candy, a toasted malt, and overall a pervasive warmth that I enjoyed. Very nice.

Aroma of honey, caramel, bread, slightly winey, with some dark fruit. Huge, caramel, honey flavor with cookies and cake. Sweet and hot. Big, thick palate. Smooth and hot. A fun beer when taken in moderation. Better with some age.
