COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

Bottle. Malts, malts malts. Aroma, sweet mild malts. Flavor, sweet mild malts. Alcohol hidden quite well, especially for 11%. Touch of caramel notes, that’s about it. Inoffensive, highly drinkable for what it is, but nothing else really pops out of this one.

This bottle pours clear red with a thin tan head that mostly disappears. Aroma is caramel sweetness, slight alcohol and sweet fruit. Thick sweet taste with a little alcohol coming through the nose almost making it taste like cough syrup. It has a very rich texture and flavor to it and finishes well. Plus the label tells about the German law Reinheitsgebot but it’s all in German. Good authentic brew.

caramel, bread, golden, clear, white foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, oily feel, long alcoholic finish.

tawny colored with a tall flully white head. wood and red fruit aroma in good balance and intensity. Light in body and doesn’t remind me of a concentrated doppelbock at all. the body is very thin and the fruity sweetness reminds me more of a barleywine that goes down much too easy. Milk caramel, oak, and cherry.

Keg Can. Pours amber\golden with a decent off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts and hops. Flavor is overly sweet with bitter hoppy undertones. I just wasn’t enjoying this one.

Pure amber body with mild carbonation and a medium sudsy white head that faded flat. Sweet malt syrup aroma plus pecans and big time alcohol. Flavor is sweet and hot and reminds me of caramel and strawberries with a rich, syrupy malt character. Very mild hop profile and bitterness. Mostly flat, syrupy texture. A sweet, mostly clean, alcohol delivery vehicle. I can feel the heat all the way down. I wouldn’t pay to revisit this.

bottle. Copper pour, with a small white head. Slightly sweet fruity aroma. Sweet flavor as well, a little boozy as well. Pretty good.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2007 May 19, 2007 Re-rate
Musy, stewed fruit and malt aroma has an edge of cherry liquer to it. The body is a transparent orange/amber and the thumb thick white, diminishes rapidly. Dry fore is malt laden with fruit notes on the edges and a sort of toasty, spent grainy flavor. Alcohol and very faint maple and caramel notes make up the finish. I really hated this the first time I had it a year or so ago, but I find it much more palatable. I’ve also learned that it isn’t really an Eisbock just a very strong lager.
Original Rating: 2.4
I have only had a few eisbocks, but this is the first I did not like. Way too present alcohol made it undrinkable. And what flavors there are a kinda malt/caramel sweetness are buried in that alcohol. If there was an Avery label on this I’d totally believe it was an Avery beer.
