COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

The myth. Pours clear, vibrant amber with a moderate, crisp, offwhite head. No retention, no lace. Smells sweet and rich just like port. Malty sweetness for sure. Tastes sweet and malty thick, some alcohol flavor, almost a slight scotch, peat, wood type flavor as well. Medium, syrupy body, good carbonation.

Look of a tarnished golden hue of morning's first light. Effervescent glow of radiant golden dew. Nose of caramel walnuts roasted on an open fire. Medicinal fumes of a dentist office. Smooth alcohol taste.

Darkover (1440) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 31, 2003
Orange color with a small head. Aroma is very sweet, citrus and candy. Flavor is very sweet, syrupy, cloying, toffee, candy, acidic. Lots of alcohol warmth.

Malty sweet aroma with choclatey undertones. Taste was same, well rounded, and nicely hid the huge alcohol (contrary to what others have found). Minimal aftertaste, also. (12oz/$3)

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2007 Rerate (16/09/2007), 33cl bottle, Leffe goblet, bbe 01-01-09. Pours a clear brassy hue with orange highlights, covered by a thin, foamy off-white head, which dissipates into nothingness. Initial aroma is of treacle, cherry confiture and alcohol. Some sherry (veering to cardboard at times) oxidation and raw sugar then come into play. Noting “pain aux raisins” could sum up much of the aroma. The flavour is massively sweet as was expected, like cake covered with an inch of cream cheese icing. Yes, indeed there is a little cream cheese type tang going on, which actually isn’t so bad because it offsets the sweetness a little. But only a little. The finish lets out a gasp of cherry acidity, but finishes overly sweet and lacking any noticeable hops in the grand scheme of things. The alcohol doesn’t burn, but there’s no mistaking it’s presence at the same time. Heavy body, with a sticky texture and carbonation struggling to keep up. Aside from the transparent alcohol, and the light cardboard element, there’s nothing bad about this beer; but for an 11% dessert sipper, I expect a lot more complexity and nuance. I’ve had fine sherry and port, this misses the mark by a mile, almost to the point of being useless outside of “bang for your buck”. And it gets slightly metallic as it warms, so that doesn’t help either. Though it does pick a rather nice tupelo honey note. Okay, a little better than average, all told. Original score: 8/4/8/4/16 = 4.0

33 cL bottle, snifter. Chocolate, molasses, cookie malt (M); prunes, tangerine, sherry, ruby port, anise aromas. Nose is dark, sweet and fruity. Tall, off-white, head is creamy and slowly diminishing and sits on a gorgeous amber body. Monstrously sweet flavor thins to a heavily sweet flavor. I, in fact, did not find it cloying. Comes off more drinkable than the Eggenberg beers. Heavy body, oily/creamy texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: um...get crunked?

zero head, reddish brown and clear. aroma is slightly fruity but the alcohol is extremely apparent in this one...and not in a good way.

strong beer tasting '04: deep amber, small head. butterscotch, hard candy and alcohol on the nose. flavour starts out nicely with a mix of dried fruit - cherries, raisin, date, cranberry. then goes kind of funky with a pet food kind of taste. not bad overall, though.

[Sampled at Carsten Bertelsens Ølrejsen.] Very goodlooking and sweetfatty aroma with notes of caramel, syrup and some alcohol. The strong alcohol dominates the sweetflavor in a way that does not heat the fire in me, (although it is 11 %). But it is better each time I taste it, so maybe next time it’s more than 3.0
