UPDATED: FEB 11, 2007 Bottle... Co-rated with my four-year-old nephew... Ok, ok, he only contributed to the comments regarding appearance and aroma... Pours black with a small, creamy, well-tanned head and minimal lacework (my nephew believes the head is white. Ok, so colors are not one of his stronger points). Smells like a bear... so my nephew says. I doubt he’s ever smelled a bear. The nose is actually of milk chocolate, vanilla and buttermilk.
The flavor is thin and watery, but has some nice milk chocolate notes.
Light-bodied and softly carbonated.
Short, watery finish. Tastes great; smells great, but not a lot of body.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 hopdog (7652) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 10, 2006
12oz bottle. Poured a dark, dark black with an averaged sized dark tan head. Nice looking. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee and light oatmeal. Tastes of roasted malts, licorice, chocolate, and light coffee. Tastes were a little on the thin side (I guess I expected more after the aroma). Creamy and somewhat lively body.

Bottle poured an opaque black with reddish highlights and lasting brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Palate was light bodied and thin. Flavors of coffee, a bit of roastiness and some chocolate notes with a forgetable lightly roasty finish.

Dark brown/black color with a thin fizzy tan head. Aroma of sweet oats and a touch of roasted malt. Body is lightly sweet and rich with a strong hoppy bitterness. Finishes bitter and chalky with some coffee tones. This could use a touch more sweetness and some balance.

Dark brown pour with a tan head. Licorice, roasted malt, hints of smoke, and an oatmeal richness to it. A decent chocolate note and some light vanilla sweetness. A little bit bland in terms of the flavor. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and some nice oatmeal notes. Very mild vanilla-like sweetness.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DocLock (6789) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 6, 2007
Pours jet black with 1-finger tan head. Aroma is liquid raisins dipped in dark chocolate and molasses. Tastes rather sweet, with the malt mixed with raisin, plum, cinnamon, brown sugar, tobacco, mild maple syrup, and prunes, even some blackberry notes. Rich complex palate that gets a tad tart late, but retains a complex flavor and aroma profile. I didn;t expect this one to be so good.

Bottle, Brew 1372. Poured medium-viscosity deep brown with a yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up very sweet toasted cocoa, molasses, and vanilla with some oat backing.. a little char to darken it up.. very nice presentation. The flavor found rolled oats, molasses, and black patent maltage with lots of vanilla and come coffee bitterness around the edges.. toasty, sweet, and tasty. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate, despite the hefty sweetness present.. not quite as smooth a feel as I wanted, but mighty enjoyable aside from that!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Cletus (6177) - Connecticut, USA - JUL 11, 2006
Bottle courtesy of Irishboy. Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smells of malt, rich chocolate and some oats. Tastes malty with nice dark chocolate elements. Some cherry tartness is there as the beer warms up. Finish is coffeeish and slightly bitter with some nice earthy hops revealing themselves at the very end. Great multi-layered sweet stout.
